    Re: Holton Playing Tendencies

I'm still really enjoying my Tenor. I'll try and post some images of it soon and I'd like to share the serial number too, which I know is a total lottery with Holtons.

    In terms of playing...

Re: That "Sing, Sing, Sing" sound

Thanks, I'll take a crack at it.

Still happy to hear any solos that people suggest I listen to. I like the collective mind here - I get to hear about loads of stuff that I wouldn't find otherwise.

Re: That "Sing, Sing, Sing" sound

Yes, true. So, can I tap the collective brain here for any particularly good solos or tunes? (I'll follow up on Sasquatch's suggestions, but there's a lot of stuff out there).

    That "Sing, Sing, Sing" sound

We're about to do a version of Sing, Sing, Sing in our local wind orchestra. I love the tune and have fun playing over it (and will be soloing), but there's that certain sound I can't seem to find -...

    Re: Jazz = Sleep Loss?

My guess would be that A) it's your creative juices flowing or B) it's because jazz - especially experimental - is deliberately discordant and rhythmically uneven, which probably makes your brain...

    Re: Mr. Carter

I thought the 'owning' thing might be a bit much. I'm a great Carter fan and have loads of his stuff, but I like Redman to. I'd give my right hand to play as well as either of them... oh, wait...

    Re: Mr. Carter

I know what you mean, but I like that he's exploring outside of repeating what went on 40+ years before.

But I have to agree with the YouTubers that Mr. Redman "owns Carter" in this vid of the...

    Re: Mr. Carter

Great stuff! James Carter is one the most interesting players around at the moment IMHO.

Re: How to correct a bad posture?

I can really recommend Yoga - especially Iyengar Yoga which places a lot of emphasis on correct alignment. I know it seems unrelated to playing, but it develops a great sense of body and posture...
  11. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

Has anyone seen James Carter live? I missed him when he played near here in Strasbourg (only found out on the day - sold out).
  12. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

That's one of the reasons I like James Carter, but he seems not to get much of a mention on here. Why's that? Opinions anyone?
  13. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

Not at all, it's great to hear those stories!
  14. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

Only one vote for James Carter here? I think he's one of the more interesting players around at the moment and seems to be enormously versatile.
  15. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

Thanks everyone - I'd heard of very few of those, so I've got plenty of listening to do. Just what I was after!
  16. Re: Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

Heh - I love this forum for the quick and smart responses.

Joshua Redmond was on my list already (I know, I said I didn't have a list, but that's a list of one). I hadn't heard of but really like...
  17. Top 5 (or more) players from the last decade only?

There are a zillion top 5 or 10 lists for all-time players, but I'm interested in finding out about new players that I might not have heard of. So, I thought I'd narrow the search to find some of...

    Re: question about junkdude.com

I think it's because he's got an automatic re-direct to an HTTPS url, which is why it's throwing up the error, but the certificate is valid from what I can see and it's the correct site.

    Re: Holton Playing Tendencies

Yes, I'm still very happy with my Holton. It seems to be a bit of a mysterious hit and miss though about which models are good and bad. My sax tech reckons mine is late 30s or early 40s judging by...
