Re: FS: 1986 Selmer Super Action 80 Alto

    Hi,
I live in Boston and am interested in your horn. Does it come with a mouthpiece? If you are in the Berklee area would it be possible for me to try it?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Re: Chinese Mouthpieces - Crazy New Baffle?

Dr.G- my previous post about the safety of Chinese products also stems from my lab experiences. Interesting that it's so universal.

Re: Chinese Mouthpieces - Crazy New Baffle?

don't put anything made in China in your mouth.
  6. Re: Late Bloomer's dilemma: Deciding on a "career" horn.

Just buy a playable Mark VI and you can't go wrong.
If you hate it, you can sell it for what you paid or even more.
If you like it, you're set. most other modern horns are VI replicas anyway.

    Selmer VI tenor appraisal needed

    Hi,
I understand this is difficult for anyone to do online, without the horn in front of them, but I need a ball park estimate for the value of a '65 Mark VI with original dark lacquer at about 80%,...

    Re: Yamaha vs Selmer

Dino Govoni (tremendous player and Berklee faculty in Boston, look him up on Youtube) switched from a VI to the Yamaha UL Z and he sounds damn good. He said the Yama had a more even scale and...

Re: SA80 SII tenor vs. mark VI ?

as a sa80II owner who is always tempted by the VI, i would love to hear samples of your saxes! do you think the hunt (and $$ spent) was worthwhile with respect to difference in timbre you are getting...

    Re: John Coltrane Biography?

i just finished the Ratliff book. i would not recommend it. the prose is bad- just too wordy and sometimes i don't think the author even knows what he is trying to say. it's written in a flowery,...

Re: why is one lig better than another

The real reason people think a lig makes a difference is because the reed is not exactly in the same position when they switch back and forth. you get different responses with the same lig if you...

    Florida vs. Early Babbitt STM

    Hello,

Does anyone know from experience if the EB STMs are generally brighter than Florida's? Is there a significant difference in tone overall that justifies such high prices for the Florida...

Re: Metal vs. Rubber, hot and cold weather...

that's funny you mention it...i was thinking the exact thing not long ago. I like a warmer tone that you get with rubber when it's cold and favor the focused, colder metal link tone when it's warm. I...
  16. Re: What's your impression of the difference between Ref 54 and Serie III tenors?

    gary,
go to Youtube and look up Jay Thomas. He tests these horns back-to-back. Honestly, I find it hard to detect a significant difference among all the modern Selmers he plays.
  17. Re: Florida model tenor, help with authenticity please!

So if you play a mouthpiece with nickel exposed should you worry about toxicity?
  18. Re: Where To Buy the NEW 'Vintage' Otto Link Slant Tenor?

I wonder if the rubber formula is the same? and also how it compares to the Tenney Slant and even the Jody jazz hr.

    Re: Chirping Otto Link

    Thanks everyone.
If I fail the squeak test, I think I'll first start with the cheapest remedy (reeds) and then try the Lig, then if all else fails, the most expensive remedy (re-baffle-ization).

    Chirping Otto Link

    Hi all,
I've been playing an EB Link for about a month now and I really like the sound but the damn thing always chirps (loudly!) when I attack an upper register note. It sounds like a high harmonic...
