Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

We have one guy over 60. Most of us are in our fifties, trumpeter is mid-forties.

Haven't played in a band with a woman instrumentalist on the ships I've been on, but I gather there are a couple...

I don't know of one. The required medicals might prove a challenge for some older applicants.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

At sea, heading for Ponta del Gada. Finally got myself a small kettle and an Aeropress coffee maker for my room. Way better than the ship coffee!

Usually, the Bay of Biscay is where we expect slightly rough waters on the way back to England.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

We played the show with our guest ent singer last nite. Tenor player's clarinet took a dive during rehearsal, but I fixed the bent key that resulted. The production show was cancelled, as it was...

Could be interesting playing the show tonight - the ship's rockin' and rolling!

I'm going to be hanging with my cousin in HK, so I'll leave the agenda to him.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

It means I'll be celebrating my 52nd birthday at sea, but I get to hang with one of my cousins in HK the next day.

Re: Am I the only one who feels this way?

I just pulled out my recordings of Bird playing the Cole Porter songbook and listened to it in its entirety in my cabin on the ship yesterday.

Masterful. Sublime. When I listen to Bird, there...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Most of the guys I've been working with view it as a fill-in, rather than a permanent thing.

Even though I'm booked on ships into July, for me it's something to bridge theatre seasons.

Night off tonite - first one on Oriana. The guest ent only has 3 horn charts. Tenor. I brought a tenor m/p just in case, so if the tenor player needs a night off for the 2nd show, I'll cover it.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

In port today at Funchal, Madeira. Just sitting down to a lunch of the local specialty - garlic and vinegar marinated pork. Like the Azores, there's interesting tiled streets and lots of pedestrian...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I've been thinking about what comes after this cruise finishes in February. I just got an offer for a cruise starting in March in Tokyo, and pretty much taking in all of Asia and Europe!

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

It's interesting getting used to a new ship. Deck numbers are all different, I have to cope with watertight doors on my cabin level, and multiple performing venues.

Last ship had 110v plugs as...

Once again, somewhat older musicians. The trumpeter, who's 44, is the youngest.

I'm on alto and doubles, and they fit nicely in the bottom of my wardrobe.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Just joined the Oriana in S'hampton.

I'll be here 'til Feb 6/15.

Smaller crew cabins, but much cleaner. The theatre here is all on one level, rather than three. First show with a...
