Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

    Yep, 889 Artist model.

Dimedici 1011 flute, and my old Selmer 10s clarinet. My 10s has a Bb bis mechanism that Steve Fox made for it about 20 years ago. Never know when you're going to have to...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I chose to transport my tenor in the original Jupiter coffin case, but bubble wrapped and gate checked. It arrived in excellent shape. When I take my alto, it's going in a Walt Johnson case as...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I was contracted for tenor/clarinet/flute, so that's what I have with me. This first contract is just over a month, then I have a week off, and return to a different ship on alto/clarinet/flute.

    I...

    Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

So, I'm in Messina, in a lovely little hotel overlooking the harbour. It's taken me close to 24 hours from the time I left Stratford to get here. Drive to YYZ, plane to Rome (if you can avoid...

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

Flying out from Toronto tonight. Quick stopover in Rome, short flight to Catania, drive to Messina. Overnight in a hotel, then boarding the Arcadia on Thursday morning!

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

It seems to vary from line to line. The ships I'll be on are adult only cruises. They're also not the largest vessels. The compensation actually exceeds what I expected for a first time ship musician...

Re: Anyone know Vito mouthpiece sizes?

I want to say the R3 soprano pieces have a tip opening somewhere in the range of .045" to .050".

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

With most of the theatre work here being seasonal, it may be that going out on ships will help keep the income a bit more consistent for me.

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

Wow, there's a lot of paperwork and running around to get OK'd!

Coolest thing though - the doc who did my medical is a saxophonist!

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

I plan on checking in as often as I can. Home port will be Southampton, UK, so I'm hoping to meet Pete Thomas!

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

Turned out my audition went over very well - I'm flying out Tuesday to join a ship in Italy. Tenor sax/flute/clarinet. Contract runs til the end of November, and it looks like they've got another...

If you want feedback, why not post samples of your playing? You could always participate in the SOTW tuneof the month topic.

    Re: Soprano and wind band?

None of which are for soprano...

The Piazzolla piece is good. There's wind band + soloist arrangements of of at least one of the Albinoni oboe concerti available that work great for soprano....

    Re: Anne of Green Gables

I've played a couple of productions of The Sound of Music that I had to scrape off my shoes after they closed.

Re: Just did a cruise ship audition!

For an agency. I believe they also may recruit for Cirque du Soleil. As far as I'm concerned, they wouldn't have asked unless they felt there might be some benefit to doing it.

Just did a cruise ship audition!

I just did a video audition for a cruise ship gig this week.

It was actually fairly enjoyable, most likely because it's so much like what I do as a theatre musician. Easier, in some ways. There...

    Re: Anne of Green Gables

I've played the fl/picc book, the bassoon book & the bass book at various times. I like some of the tunes. It's certainly not the worst show I've ever played.

    Re: Remembering Hank Levy!

One of the first big band charts I ever transcribed was Hank Levy's "Alone". It's a really great 5/4 bossa.
