Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I'm actually still in LHR, waiting for my flight.

I'll be pruning my wardrobe for the next trip. There's plenty of stuff I took that I didn't use.

As for gear, I'm playing alto rather that...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I have a week in Canada, then back to sea. I'm wondering if I should just continue this thread or start a fresh one.

    Anyone?

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Not here - I've already got my pay, my passport and my flight itinerary. My crew card is linked to a CC, so I don't have to settle up my account. All I have to do in the morning is finish packing,...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Last sea day of the current cruise. I'll be back in Southampton the morning of the 27th, then leave Heathrow at 5:00 GMT for Toronto. I'm getting picked up there, and could be in my own bed by 11:00...

A word of advice to the aspiring woodwind player who wants to play on British ship (Carnival UK, P&O, Cunard) - make sure you know how to play Stranger On The Shore, preferably on clarinet.

Just pulling into Ponta del Gada. First port we've come to with cool, overcast weather.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

We were supposed to be in Horta on Sunday, but it's a tender port and rough seas are in the forecast. Ponta del Garda as the optional stop. Good access to wifi there! Gives me a chance to Skype and...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I just do my own laundry. I've got time to spare.

We're diverting to a different port in the Azores on the way back, due to rough weather. It's a dock, rather than a tender port, so that's good...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

A typical day of work starts at 5:00 with the rehearsal with that evenings guest entertainer.

The shows are 45 min in length, so rehearsal is usually about an hour. At that point, I usually head...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

IPM for us is split shifts. I picked the aft, but didn't know about the crew drill planned for that day. In future I'm going for morning IPM duty.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Actually, it's mandated by maritime law. It's in case of emergencies on board while the ship is in port. I only have to to one afternoon out of the 7 port days on this particular cruise.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

In Roseau, Dominica, this morning. Full crew drills in the morning, and I'm on in port manning duty from 1:00 today. Managed to find a nice little roadside bar with reggae playing at a non-deafening...

I've got WAY more stories now!

And just an FYI to everyone - if you're ever in Southampton, Pete makes a damn fine cup of coffee!

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

The one thing I've been missing working on an English ship is chicken wings. Currently remedying that lack in St. Maarten.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

We don't have any overnight ports on our itinerary, so we have to be back on board an hour before sailing. Not sure what the particulars were when the ship did overnights in NYC and Quebec.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Yes, though if you wanted to stay in your cabin, the odds of you getting nailed would be nil, unless you were disturbing other crew cabins around you.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

It's an adults only cruise. The company gets a lot of passengers who don't want to fly to their cruise, I think that may skew the age range in favour of seniors.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Had a nice hang in Antigua yesterday and did a lot of Skyping with friends and family. We're in Tortola today; still waiting to get off the ship. We're anchored, and have to go ashore via tender.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

In Antigua today. First of five port days in a row, after five sea days.

Played a couple of nights with a singer doing some very good classical/Broadway charts. Did a night of big band era jazz...

The couples I've met have been musical partners. There's a husband and wife duo, spouses as part of a quartet, and spouses as part of a trio. Two folks working in different areas could easily get...
