Poll: Re: Best portable sax stand

Just bought the Hercules Travlite. It's a piece of useless trash. Totally useless for a tenor - The prongs are way too narrow to fit my tenor's bell, unless I jamb it in hard, and the whole stand is...

Re: Holding the tenor - strap or thumb?

I sometimes let the back of the bow rest against the front of my right hip; well, more the top of my right thigh. I have to put my weight on my left leg slightly, and put my right foot forwards a...

    Re: false teeth

I don't think you can wear that type !
The main problem is sore gums. I get that after a few hours of blowing.

Re: Where do you keep your saxes?

One or two in cases, the rest of them laying around all over the house, mostly on their stands.

Re: What did Adolphe do exactly ?

Of course, the keywork and the fingering bear no resemblence to the Ophicleide's (thank god for that !)
  6. Re: How the heck did Mr. Sax think of the saxophone???

If you tried to play a HOBO - Surely you'd get a BUM note ?

What did Adolphe do exactly ?

This has been puzzling me for a while - Does anyone know exactly how Adolphe Sax created the saxophone ? - Did he have to actually make a load of experimental metal tube designs, with hole positions...

    Re: Straight and curved necks

I have both a straight and a curvy soprano....... I discovered through experimentation that the most comfortable situation is to fit the curved neck from my curvy, onto my straight, and use the...

    Re: false teeth

I think I read somewhere that in the UK around 65 % of people have some kind of denture - So I suppose 65 % of sax players have a denture too - This can mean just a small part-denture; not...

Re: plastic teeth may be a problem.....

No intonation problems......no dynamic airflow problem, just some gum pain if I bite too hard. If I have a long evening of playing, then the next day my top gum can be a little sore and tender, high...

Re: Tenor sax vs Bass clarinet reeds

I haven't received my new bass clarinet yet - But I'll be looking for a reed / mouthpiece combination that will give me a good hard jazz sound. Any hints on mouthpiece types to achieve this result,...

Tenor sax vs Bass clarinet reeds

What's the difference between tenor sax reeds and bass clarinet reeds ?
I ask because years ago I used to use tenor sax reeds on my sax AND bass clarinet.
I'm shortly going to resume bass clarinet...

Re: never buy a cheap asian horn!!

I bought my G4M Alto in March 2007 - Still going strong and not a single problem with it ! - A couple of weeks after buying that instrument I bought the G4M Tenor - This has recently had problems !...

Re: Sax System Oboes - Would You?...

It would go part way to alleviating some of the discrepancies if you were to swap around the RH pinkie Eb and C keys - If I remember correctly they are the opposite way around on the oboe, to the...

Re: never buy a cheap asian horn!!

Did he mention the brand of that sax ? -
I guess each of us can only speak from their own personal experience. I've had my G4M Tenor for what must be nearly two years now- My initial message was...

    Re: Ouch! My Thumb

I tried that once....and found that not having point of contact for the thumb left my hand feeling strangely "at a loss", position-wise.
However, I also tried refitting the thumbhook UPSIDE-DOWN....

    Re: OW! Thumbhook.

Brass is pretty soft - not too good in tension - but you can get neckstraps that are a steel chain, apart from the padded bit that goes behind the neck. Personally I love the woven gortex-style...

    Re: Ouch! My Thumb

A lot of advice tells us to let the sax hang at its natural balance point and not push out with the RH thumb - Trouble is, I'm pretty tall with long arms. If I do that then my right hand would be up...

Re: Sax System Oboes - Would You?...

I agree - Knowing the sax fingering doesn't place you at any disadvantage in learning the oboe fingering, or any other fingering come to that. In fact it's probably an advantage if anything.
