    Re: EMC2 round 14 Win-win

Mr Lyrical seems happy to continue to present new backing tracks for your playing pleasure, so I'm handing over to him. It's up to all of you if you wish to keep this thread going. The only way...

    Re: Jam Track for you

OK, You've got me confused again. The post above says the stuff you're doing "hasn't helped you much in being a jazz musician" and the one before that you're talking about teaching for 20 years and...

    Re: Jam Track for you

As said, I found it odd, so maybe don't get the humor behind someone asking others to work for them so that they could steal their work. This is maybe what I was referring to in the limitations of...

    Re: Jam Track for you

Hate? Asking for licks to copy is not a little strange/rude? Hey you...do this work for me I'm too lazy to do it myself. This is a written forum, which has limitations. If you re-read I don't...

    Re: Jam Track for you

Point was that if you are just a lick copier, YOU are not playing. Make the music come from you. Advice was given, ignored and then the chorus of "we must play changes" came in with the chords for...

    Re: Jam Track for you

At the risk of sounding like a gerk...if you can't play this without a chord chart you probably don't have anything anyone would want to copy.
  7. Re: Chuck Israels - "An Unpopular Perspective on Jazz Education"

I'm with Joe on this one as it's not a matter of whether or not what you do has never been done before, but as an improvisor what you bring to it and how it communicates to others. Too many have...

    Re: Jam Track for you

Interesting concept posting a backing so you can "steal licks". How about just singing a melody line for yourself and then trying to play that? Making the music come from you is what it's all...

    Re: How much reverb?

Hakukani already touched on this, but the key is to hear the recording as a whole. As sax players we tend to listen to just ourselves. The common trap is to try to "mellow out" a dry sounding sax...
  10. Re: For classical saxophone amateurs A.Glazunov Concerto for Saxophone

    Simply beautiful.
  11. Re: Bali run on the tenor, recorded at home

Seems to me you are doing pretty well and playing a lot more contemporary music than most on this site. Good to hear somebody who is part of and playing in the 21st century. Seems to me that a...
  12. Re: Bali run on the tenor, recorded at home

Very slick for a home recorded version. Fine playing, but you'll find that many here won't acknowledge that as it's in that dreaded realm of smooth jazz. Not much about you in your profile. Tell...

    Re: EMC2 round 14 Win-win

Thanks again Davey. Man with your chops and tone you'd be awesome on a nino...no need for altissimo! I've got four right now, want to buy one?

Nevertoolate, you're here in Auckland! Give me a...

    Re: EMC2 round 14 Win-win

Thanks Davey. Unfortunately I just noticed that I posted the wrong track (did three takes). Here's the one I meant to post. Could be interesting to have both up for comparison as they have the same...

    Re: I feel Tenderly !!!!

Great players can put more feeling into just one note than a whole bunch of notes that mean nothing.

    Re: I feel Tenderly !!!!

I'm with Ian on this too. Suits your style of playing/tone. Lots of players out there who can string together notes without tone, feeling or much musicality. This requires real musical ability and...
  17. Re: Polka Dots and Moonbeams (big band) - For your Critique

Good sounding band. Your tone is really nice, but your a little sharp, which is better than being flat. Most noticeable when you are in the upper register. The solo was good, but hard to tell how...

    Re: EMC2 round 14 Win-win

Here's a quick take using sopranino. I've interpreted this as a "folk" ballad and more of a duet with the guitar rather than solo over backing. Will probably try again with a different instrument....

    Re: EMC2 round 14 Win-win

Boy this fits like a glove. Very nice one Davey. Isn't it great having a backing track with such a different feel? Hopefully this will attract some more players as it deserves to be heard and...

Re: Invitation (love this backing track!)

It's a keeper! This is a really good sound for how you play, and you do sound very comfortable and not pushing too hard. Very slight tendency to go sharp up top, but that will probably iron itself...
