    Re: Jimmy Dorsey Mouthpiece info

If that's an original 3 tip from the 50s, it is likely to be quite closed.

There are some pictures of a refaced tenor model here: http://www.getasax.com/product_info.php?products_id=491

    Box Sets for the Holidays

I'm thinking of treating myself to a box set for the holidays - since no one else will HaHaHa.

Feel free to make a recommendation. It doesn't have to be new, or jazz, just something worthwhile,...

    Re: Oldest Know Saxophone Method

There's no method that can teach that. In fact, to judge from all the Wiedoeft imitators I've seen on youtube destroying that song and others of Wiedoeft's, the style must be impossible to reproduce....

Any Jazz Radio DJs on the Forum

I DJ'ed years ago at college radio stations at Northwestern and the University of Chicago. It was great fun. When I first started at WHPK, my timeslot was 3-6 - A.M., on Saturday morning. I was...

    Re: Oldest Know Saxophone Method

There's a D.M.A. dissertation by Gail Levinsky that should answer your question: An Analysis and Comparison of Early Saxophone Methods Published Between 1846-1946.

    Here's the Worldcat entry which...

    Re: Pianist Hazel Scott

The book mentions this recording. Evidently it came to light after Scott's death and she was not aware of its existence. Great picture of Bird there.

She was pals with loads of the jazz greats of...

    Re: Pianist Hazel Scott

I got the autobiography and it's well worth reading. For starters, it solves the mystery that Marian left dangling about that piano - it was a Steinway D that Hazel's first husband, Adam Clayton...

    Re: Lady Gaga's got chops.

I agree. I much prefer her rah-rah-ooo-la-la-la shtick to this, but I admit that the vast majority of the genre passed off as "jazz" singing makes me gag-a.

    Re: Free the G-Man!!

Wow, now I've seen everything. I started this thread as a joke, but people are seriously discussing Kenny G's politics and ethics? And I thought the threads discussing his music were bad...

What a lovely tradition you are establishing, Charlie. I only wish I were in the area to enjoy the concert in person.

    Free the G-Man!!

OK, he's not in jail, yet, but the G-Meister is in hot water with the Chinese authorities over an innocent stroll around Hong Kong. Notice in the photo he doesn't even have his saxophone with him, so...

    Pianist Hazel Scott

Hazel's name does not come up too often, but she was a child prodigy pianist in jazz and classical, a singer, appeared in several Hollywood movies, and was enough of a political rabble-rouser to be...
  19. Re: Zappa Fans: Interesting History Detectives Episode

Yes, the suit coat and the bell were amazing to me. Who keeps a junky old bell in storage for 50 years... and can actually find the darn thing when they want to?

Re: Tone Master copies for tenor

Two questions Sakshama: 1) what do you mean by "alto facing" and 2) when are you going to make a reproduction of that mouthpiece??
