Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Went to Tom Lee Music and tried some flutes by Tomasi. There was one with a wood lip plate that played particularly well - but wood is not a climate friendly material for working at sea or in Canada.

No worries. I often stay ketogenic at home. Keeps my body fat % down, and mental acuity up.

Kaoshiung, Taiwan. If I'm not mistaken, this is where Jupiter is headquartered. Got in a lovely Skype with a friend back in Canada.

Keelung, Taiwan is the port today. Managed to change some Yen into NTD. Need to get some coffee and get away from the ship. We had a long morning of training and safety testing.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Nearly impossible to stay in ketosis on a ship. Best I can do is to stay moderately low carb.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Ishigaki today. Met a lovely couple on the main street who were traveling from Kyoto. They spoke English very well, and were quite helpful. Having some lunch, then I'm going to sample some Japanese...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Naha, Okinawa today. I found a Tower Records here, and got three Duke Ellington Recordings I've never seen on CD before, as well as a recording of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra playing music from...

Four horns, four rhythm on this ship. Crew drills seem to be weekly instead of every two weeks. No IPM on this ship though.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

In other news, my iPad is getting a workout on this trip. The bandleader has a 674 page book of tunes in pdf form that he wants us to use for dance/listening sets in the lounge.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

I didn't really find Shanghai all that other people said it would be. We're back at sea for a day, then in Okinawa, Japan for a couple of days.

The trumpet player in the orchestra has already been...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Pretty smooth waters so far, and the ship definitely has less vibration than the previous ships I've been on.

Temperatures here are in the low teens (in Celsius).

    We're in Shanghai right now,...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Hmmm, I think some posts didn't make it. Visited Busan, Korea yesterday. Currently at sea on the way to Shanghai. We're there for two days, then back at sea for a day, then on to Okinawa.

    Re: Bari to bassoon?

FWIW, I bought my current bassoon on ebay. It's a Fox Model III. That's the professional plastic model. Keys to high D, RH whisper lock. It's a seriously decent bassoon, and I got it for under $2000...

    Re: Bari to bassoon?

A Fox/Renard model 41 is quite possibly one of the best choices for a beginning bassoonist.

I've used ProTecs for years with no issues. I did get a Walt Johnson for traveling with my alto though.

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

The flight from Chicago to Tokyo is 12.5-13 hours. I was in regular Economy, so I couldn't stretch out as much as I'd have liked. The seat beside me was vacant, so that made things a bit easier.

    I...

Re: Merlin's Cruise ship gig thread

Okay, not a great sleep, but some. And what a cool place so far! The toilet has an automated bidet built into it, the bathroom mirror is heated so it doesn't steam up when you use the shower, there's...

Re: Tablet Use for Playing Shows

I carry my iPad with a few different reader apps for playing on the ship. It's definitely the easiest way to approach playing tunes, since I can leave my heavy book at home and have more room for...
