I am often asked about scales used to solo over chord progression. My response is usually to shift focus more on developing your phrasing rather than simply learning new scales. Learning new scales only will produce limited results because THE WAY you play has not really changed. Improving your phrasing deals more with the actual element of HOW rather than "what" notes to play. When it comes to phrasing, remember that it is all about the little nuances that can make ALL the difference.

Hi Tim, just signed you up too. Funny though, I had read an article you wrote about transcriptions and how it was your job so one should go out and buy the book (or something to that effect!), I did. Unfortunately it doesn't correspond at all to any version of 'Stars Fell over Alabama' that I've ever heard. What a shame!

Just to let you know, I'm in the Seattle area and have studied with Don Lanphere and Hadley Caliman (which are both no longer with us) for about two years with each one. I'm an old fart (66) and didn't learn much other than I had a lot to learn. I've enjoyed your post over the time here on SOTW. I grew up in Arkansas, hence "ArkansasRed".
