I wanted to play as a kid, but had asthma and my folks thought I would not be able to blow the thing. So, when in college, I picked up a silver King alto for $67. I found a marvelous teacher in UC Irvine, Jimmy Dixon. He spent hours and hours with me for free. But we, had other habits that cost us both dearly. I sold a Mark VI a few years later to get high. Jimmy wound up homeless. Now we are both sober.
I took the saxopnone back up when I was 53. I was a bicycle racer and just running out of legs, needed a new obsession and re-discoverd the saxophone.
I have had two great teachers since: Frank Fontaine and Lewis Van Taylor and I discovered I will never be John Coltrane or Joe Henderson and that I will also never be Lance Armstrong. I am ok with that.
