Lacquer wears off of horns, so yes, it is normal. Although, I don't know why it would wear off so quickly, but it is probably just from friction.

If you want dark, try a meyer in a more open tip, like a 7 or 8. I played for years on a slant sig 6*, which is about .085. Phil made me a .090 meyer, and it's plenty dark--darker than the slant.
