    For me, its always listening for the various breaks on the horn that gives it away... Either the first /second octave break or the palm keys.

    Interesting, I'd never noticed the number on my SSS alto, the bell serial number is 16125 and the tube number is 8163X. And yes, that is an "X" following the 4 digit number.
