  • Earl Turbinton aka " The African Cowboy " ~Master creator and saxophonist

    Earl Turbinton "the African Cowboy," The saxophone player from New Orleans played with musical giants, from Cannonball Adderley to B.B. King, Herbie Hancock to the Neville Brothers,to the Wild Magnolias.

    Some of my favorite CD's he did were;

    The Wild Magnolias (1974) and They Call Us Wild

    (1975);

    Zawinul (1970); This has not only Earl butWayne Shorter and is a benchmark in jazz and explorations of modern music by Jow Zawinul. Earl was the 2ed saxophone player in Weather Report but never traveled with them because of ties at the time to BB King.

    Earl Turbinton did record an outstanding CD with his brother, Willie Tee Turbinton, appropriately entitled Brothers for Life, in 1988.

    Vocalist Cassandra Wilson acknowledges the great

    saxophonist as her personal mentor.

    This man left a great thumbprint on jazz and the saxophone and should never be forgotten.

    Thanks- Tim Price

  • Noble Thinman Watts Fan Club

    The 1950s R&B scene was the turf of the fire-breathing tenor sax of Noble "Thin Man" Watts was one of the most incendiary tenor players ever.

    Noble Watts joined baritone saxist Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams in 1952, recording with him for Jax and taking sax solos behind Dinah Washington, Amos Milburn, and Ruth Brown on the groundbreaking mid-'50s TV program Showtime at the Apollo (Williams led the house band for the Willie Bryant-hosted extravaganza). Later, a stint with Lionel Hampton.

    Boxer Sugar Ray Robinson managed Watts during the late '50s and early '60s, recruiting the saxist to lead the house band at the pugilist's Harlem lounge.

    When you speak of the greats of honkin' sax Thinman is one of them.
