Hi guys, I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me here. I've been asked to play a piece at my cousin's wedding next weekend - I don't have to play something but I would like to - but I can't think of anything appropriate to play. I'm not looking for a serious piece of classical repertoire...
I have seen some alto sax's with a fixed thumb hook and others with one that rotates a little. Is one better than the other or is it just personal preference? If you have an adjustable (one that rotates) one is there a way to make it fixed in one position? Thanks.
Hey guys! My 1920s Martin Alto sax that is coming in does not have a front f key, i was just wondering how much you guys find yourselves using this key when you play. When i play tenor, i never us it, but i haven't started going into the altissimo range, so that may change. Oh yeah, and do you...
Hey I need some help. I have a Clairmont Sax, and I'm having tuning problems...I'm always either Sharp or Flat...its a new sax. I've heard that some time you have to get a new saxophone adjusted. I don't know how true that is but I need some help. and suggestions?
I'm a "good" alto player, but I only listen to tenor players like Don Menza, Michael Brecker, Trane, Clarence Clemons and a couple others. Is this strange for me to lean towards tenor players more than alto players? I'm kindof lost on this one, 'cos I don't like that many alto players except for...
I just found and bought an old alto Vito saxophone for my 11 year old grandson Damian who is just starting in band. I would like to know more about the instrument like when it was made and where it was made. Can any of you tell me how to find this out? I have no idea where to start since I don't...
Hello Here are som pics of my new Yanagisawa A9937 Solid Silver alto. It is amzing i dont think i will ever want to play anything else. Andy
I've especially noticed this on youtube as to where most videos are alto saxophone videos. Is it because more songs fit the alto saxophone range? and can you guys tell me what genres of music alto is the best in and genres of music Tenor is best in? Thanks.
Hey guys i need some major help here. I am an undergraduate music student. I have a Keilworth Shadow that i dropped awhile ago so some stuff was not alined anymore, and no sound was being produced. long story short i got it fixed, but now the intonation of the horn is really out of balance....
Okay, I know i posted a thread similar to this (looking for a metal mouthpiece). But i wanted some suggestions as to what mouthpiece I should use for contemporary jazz? I have a few ideas as to what mouthpieces Beechler (bellite or hard rubber) Vandoren Java Berg Larson (hard rubber) I'm...
There is a horn for sale that has been in storage for 7 years, in addition to being played for another year or two. Would this horn require a repad, or would the pads still be soft enough to play on?
So guys I am in the market for a new Alto, and I am wondering what is your favorite modern Alto, looking into spending the most $6000. and I will be going to a store to try a couple but I would like some player feed back before.
After seeing how popular this thread was in the Tenor section. Why don't we give it a shot here? My alto setup is as follows: Selmer Mark VI Alto Early Babbit Otto Link 6* mouthpiece Francois Louis "Ultimate" ligature and smart cap Runyon Palm Key Risers Vandoren or Rigotti Reeds Oleg...
Hi. My friend plays tenor saxophone and we are in the same music program together. He has a classical mouthpiece but he needs one for Jazz Ensemble. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what he should get? He's looking to spend under $300. Thanks
For a friend, not me. What he knows: -Selmer Mark VI alto -Saxworks 8 He wants to know reeds and ligature. Thx in advance
I have been playing off and on for the past few years, moreso off than anything (focus on other instruments) but I am thinking of going on a huge sax kick soon, with the purchase of a YAS-62 in the near future. Anyways, its been over a year since I last read in a horn section, it was just an...
I'm about to be a senior in high school and plan to go to the University of Northern Colorado for a degree in jazz performance, the only thing is I've been stuck on the same Bundy II since 6th grade. I'm at the point where I feel that a better horn is needed, my parents don't see the point in...
Okay, i know metal mouthpieces don't always work but i've kinda thought this through. I recently graduated from highschool and i've been playing the saxophone since grade 7. I also got accepted into the jazz program at my local university so i figure i'm pretty good lol. I have lots of hard rubber...
Does anyone have experience with Yamaha YAS-475 (intermediate horn) and King Zephyr alto (early 70s)? I'm wondering how the two compare. TIA.
I'm becoming a craigslist junky, and today I found two saxes that I really don't know much about. I'm almost positive that they're stencils because the names aren't getting many hits on google. Ad #1: "Silver Alto Sax" Very Old Alto, bell reads Meinel & Harold and shows a german address....
I have a fairly old yas 23 alto sax and i took it in to a music store to get it cleaned because the action was not smooth. My band director requires that if our instrument is in the shop, we need to get a rental. The rental was a newer yas 23. My mom saw it and suggested that instead of getting...
So, I've started playing alto a lot in the last year or so, and am not entirely digging my beat up old Vito (Yamaha 23), although it's ok enough that I don't need to rush for a better horn. Still, I will need to get a better horn at some point and if that can be sooner rather than later all the...
I saw Art Pepper every night in the 70's at the Vanguard in NYC. With the band with Elvin. There was something, a depth and commandbut more so a life story that came out of his horn. Dues paid and all that? I dunno, but it was enough to make me go every night and wish there was a 2ed week to go...
If I were a classical player, which I am not, I would probably be guilty of some form of heresy or iconoclastic rebelliousness. I spent the day trying a Selmer metal D on my 1921 True Tone Alto. It was a surprising combination. Dark, rich, with plenty of overtones and edge when I wanted it. I...
Hello all, I am looking to upgrade my alto soon I am going in my senior year and would like to get a new one before I head off to college, I have been perusing e-Bay and I really have no idea what I am doing, so I am looking for a good model sax for under one grand. Thanks for the help.
Hello, I'm a rising senior in high school and I'm going to be going into college the fall of 2011 for Music Education, so audition season is right around the corner. With that said, I'm not sure what horn I'm going to use, seeing as I've played tenor through high school! Let me say first that...
Hi All! This is my first post on this site! I'm new to the sax [and relatively new to music as well]. A friend gave me her Bundy II alto which I'm having a blast with. I've played it a couple months now. Recently, a good sax player tested it out and said it was "challenging" at best. He...
Today, I received a brand-new, Selmer Serie III Alto from Saxforte and I just thought I would express my thoughts and experience here in these fora. I’ll have to admit to purchasing the horn without actually playing it. While Mathew Aaron, owner of Saxforte, provides some of the best prices and...
Hi there, I play a Yas875EX and I want to buy a solid silver neck, Can someone recommend a good brand??
Which would you choose and why?
Currently, I am playing on a Meyer 5m with a Vandoren Traditional Size 3 on a Reference 54 alto. I'm looking to have a much darker sound, so I'm trying out the Vandoren A28 from wwbw.com. In addition, I ordered Vandoren V12 size 3 1/2s, because I feel like the Vandoren Traditional size 3s are too...
edit* I was wondering, in your opinion, who has the best sound on alto. This is overall, not in one particular category of sound. I would probably put Johnny Hodges at the 1 spot.
What is the highest note for Yanagisawa A800(standard fingering)? Are there difference between A800 and A990 as for the (again, stanard) highest note? I mean standard fingerings here excluding fancy fingering for altissimo.
Placed in wrong group. Moving to mouthpiece thread instead.
juat a curious question. i have a yamaha alto ys 23 and it seems i have a problem with the octave key. I'm aq beginner so bear with me. when i do an A,B,C the octave key works. As soon as i do a D ,E F the octave key does nor work. it seems that as soon as i hit the key below an A the octave key...
Sonny Stitt on alto sax is the icing on the cake. Talk about smooth jazz:TGNCHK::mrgreen: Sonny had just a diversity on these horns, but that smooth burn on alto always was something special in his diversity. ReAL JAZZ, and from the core of an artist like we'll never hear in this music. Enjoy...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o45WZ7AONo On about 4:09 you can see those weird wire guards on low Bflat and B. Any idea what horn this is? Thanks! -TH
Here's the two saxs http://www.samash.com/p/PMXA67RUL%20Alto%20Saxophone%20Unlacquered_-49956718 http://www.samash.com/p/YAS62II%20Alto%20Saxophone%20Gold%20Lacquer%20Finish%20with%20Hercules%20Saxophone%20Stand_642003 They're both within my budget. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks....
Hi guys -- I am currently shooting and producing a feature-length (90-min) documentary movie about jazz. In one of the segments in the movie were we talk about Charlie Parker, I would like to include photos of a Grafton plastic alto saxophone, similar to the one that Charlie Parker played in the...
Hello folks! My grandfather gave it to me 15 years ago. I am guitarist so I don't play saxophone! Please, may you help me to know what sax I have? I have taken some photographs for you:
Anyone ever play one of these? Despite their rarity and seemingly great condition, the prices seem outrageous considering this economy. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-BUESCHER-STRAIGHT-ALTO-SAX-MINT-W-CASE-NEW-PICS_W0QQite mZ220574338654QQcategoryZ119030QQvarZQQcmdZViewItem ...
Hi all, I consider myself an intermediate-level alto player (college student, been playing about 8 years), and I am looking for some advice as I prepare to update my current set-up. I started on a good old Keilwerth ST90 (which I still break out sometimes) and I am now usually playing my...
Yeah, I use a Rovner Dark on a Jumbo Java. I have to say, it kills. Using V16's, it has a huge core, plenty of edge, and, when put on tight enough, grants me access to new altissimo notes. With a metal ligature, the core disappears. Rovner Dark is awesome!
Who can tell of his experiences with "RAMPONE & CAZZANI" horns? How do they sound? thx
Started 4 years ago with YAS275 .Wonder about changing and the respective merits of these much admired Horns. Any thoughts?
Hi I own a SA80 II alto (which I bought new in 93). Its a wonderful instrument (tone wise), but it has its downsides. I have always struggled a little with the intonation, but recently, after I started playing the tenor and soprano as well, I't seems to have gotten worse (possibly due to me not...
when did they stop making it without a G# trill key? my friend brought his grand fathers and he said it was from the 1920's
