hi, i've been playing soprano and tenor (so Bb) and heard about metal clarinets. Several brands seem to be around. Every bit of info about metal clarinets is welcome since i intend to buy one but do not have a clue what to expect (is there a brand ranking, different systems as on regular Bb...
What are some excercises you have used to help improve your (or your students') tone qualities? I know long tones...any suggestions on "variations of...???" I'm thinking 12th exercises as well, but looking for a clear plan with specific goals. Any other ideas are appreciated.
Hello, I'm a sax player, these days mostly bari. I play with local big bands and would like to learn clarinet, so I can play big band parts and also try musical theatre. I don't know squat about clarinets. A friend suggested a beginner Yamaha model, anybody have some opinions for me? Mel
Taken from The Clarinet BBoard. CSO is a tongue-in-cheek name for a clarinet of questionable value or clarinet shaped object. In case this link disappears here is what there is so far: Laval Rex Diamond Monique Wexler Weimer Heinse Gruskin
I think the bane of most starting clarinet players is the ubiquitous squeek. It`s enough to, at times, make me reach for my tenor sax. I saw in an earlier thread it mentioned that perhaps beginning clarinet players should select a mouth piece with a narrower opening as these squeek less than the...
I have a super old Noblet Clarinet from Paris, wood of course. I bought it years ago and just started playing it over my new Buffet. Someone told me it might be worth some money but I have no idea. It only has 4 serial numbers...anyone have any idea how much something like this is worth? -Joshua
My instructor (who I like and have been with almost a year) has me doing etudes out of the Jeanjean 16 studies and the Mozart Concerto in Bb. I am preparing myself to play in some community bands and hopefully add to my sax students with more clarinet students. I don't mind grinding out a song...
There are some clarinets showing up in the last few weeks on ebay that look very "fishy" to me. As an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/2009-New-Music-Instrument-YAMAHA-clarinet-with-hardcase_W0QQitemZ280406340082QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item41498531f2 New Yamaha student...
I would like to sell my daughter's unused clarinet, but I don't know the first thing about them. Printed on its all the pieces is "Buffet Crampon & Cie A Paris E11" I believe we between 500 and a thousand for it, but I don't remember anything more specific.
Hi guys (and gals) Have been playing sax and flute for many years, but am interested in taking up the clarinet. I use fairly large tip openings on my saxes, should this fact bear any relevance to my taking up clarinet? Any advice on what I SHOULD be looking for? Any info appreciated in...

I'm trying to 'double' on clarinet. Currently I am using Couesnon Conservatoire, which is pretty good. But I am wondering for an upgrade to one of the following horns: Yamaha Custom SE Yamaha Custom 82 Selmer Centered Tone or Selmer Series 9 Which one shall I go for? I prefer dark and warm...
i am wondering if anyone has tried these and if they are any good? i recently picked up an alto clarinet and i definitely like it but i need a decent mouthpeice and dont' want to break the bank. i'd be using it for many jazz and improv type stuff. i have heard the vandoren mp's are very...
I purchased a Pomarico Jazz** (Well, I ordered a Jazz * but they sent me a Jazz**) from Music and Arts, pop it in to my Bass clarinet, play, sounds good at first, then after awhile I realize there is not much difference in the sound between it and my really old Bundy mouthpiece... maybe just a bit...
So I bid on a Selmer 10S-II last night on Ebay and lost. Although the piece seemed like a good buy, somehow my heart just wasn't in it, so in a way I let it go, I guess. There is a 10G selling for $600, so I figured I didn't want to pay a lot more than that. But reading through the forums, it seems...
I've been playing clarinet for a while (okay, 8 or 9 years) but I really haven't been listening to a lot of good players. I started listening to my great uncle a little more (Sherman Kahn, maybe someone's heard of him?) and he has that sound that I really want. I started listening to Pete Fountain,...
I used to play clarinet a long time ago (in school) but switched to the sax later on. Recently I got back to playing my clarinet and found my finger memory still there after several decades of not touching the instrument, quite a pleasant suprise! Been playing clarinet a bit these few days, and...
Guy is selling for $1300. Sounds too good to be true. Is it?
I have one of these, it is a hand me down from my parents, my father bought it for my mother as a present for their wedding since at the time she was playing in a local symphony in Brantford, Ontario. According to Selmer's serial numbering system, the manufacturing of these instruments, or at least...
I have a Click Clarinet Barrel but don't know how it locks and I definitely don't want to break it. Can anyone please help me? Thanks Jimmy Haag H# 702 876-0734 Las Vegas jazznsax1@mac.com Please e-mail me at jazznsax1@mac.com
Hello Everyone, I'm in a jazz band down in New Orleans thats adding Bob Brookmeyer's celebration suite to its repetoire. One of the movements requires all the saxes to double Bb or bass clarinet. Since this coincides with a Chris Potter binge I'm on listening wise, I figured I would try and pick...
I've always wanted to play in the New Orleans "hot" style (aka dixieland), but have never had the opportunity to learn. I'd love to hear from people who do it for general pointers on how to approach it. Thanks.
I can't get it out... I learned the first octave (closed g-open g) on my own in a couple minutes, but the second one sounds wierd. Is this just a problem of my embouchure or something else. The clarinet's in good condition (Yamaha).
Does anyone have this case that WWBW offers? If so what do you think? I am looking at buying it but would love some opinions. I have a double Leblack hard case that I am auctioning off. I really like to have a light weight case. I had a triple that I just recently sold and that thing was...
Hi It's getting very annoying now with cane reeds keep breaking while I play. In the last few weeks I had reeds break several times in the middle of rehearsals and concerts. Sometimes I played the broken reed (no choice) and sometimes changed really fast, just gamble the new one would be ok. ...
