  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Silver\metal clarinets

hi, i've been playing soprano and tenor (so Bb) and heard about metal clarinets. Several brands seem to be around. Every bit of info about metal clarinets is welcome since i intend to buy one but do not have a clue what to expect (is there a brand ranking, different systems as on regular Bb...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Developing Clarinet Tone

What are some excercises you have used to help improve your (or your students') tone qualities? I know long tones...any suggestions on "variations of...???" I'm thinking 12th exercises as well, but looking for a clear plan with specific goals. Any other ideas are appreciated.

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: What's a good clarinet to start on?

Hello, I'm a sax player, these days mostly bari. I play with local big bands and would like to learn clarinet, so I can play big band parts and also try musical theatre. I don't know squat about clarinets. A friend suggested a beginner Yamaha model, anybody have some opinions for me? Mel

Taken from The Clarinet BBoard. CSO is a tongue-in-cheek name for a clarinet of questionable value or clarinet shaped object. In case this link disappears here is what there is so far: Laval Rex Diamond Monique Wexler Weimer Heinse Gruskin

  5. Sticky Thread Sticky: Less Squeak!

I think the bane of most starting clarinet players is the ubiquitous squeek. It`s enough to, at times, make me reach for my tenor sax. I saw in an earlier thread it mentioned that perhaps beginning clarinet players should select a mouth piece with a narrower opening as these squeek less than the...

  2. I wonder if I'm Missing alot of intermediate stuff

My instructor (who I like and have been with almost a year) has me doing etudes out of the Jeanjean 16 studies and the Mozart Concerto in Bb. I am preparing myself to play in some community bands and hopefully add to my sax students with more clarinet students. I don't mind grinding out a song...

  9. So Im really discouraged with this mouthpiece...

I purchased a Pomarico Jazz** (Well, I ordered a Jazz * but they sent me a Jazz**) from Music and Arts, pop it in to my Bass clarinet, play, sounds good at first, then after awhile I realize there is not much difference in the sound between it and my really old Bundy mouthpiece... maybe just a bit...

  10. Leblanc Concerto - advice needed

So I bid on a Selmer 10S-II last night on Ebay and lost. Although the piece seemed like a good buy, somehow my heart just wasn't in it, so in a way I let it go, I guess. There is a 10G selling for $600, so I figured I didn't want to pay a lot more than that. But reading through the forums, it seems...

  11. Reccomend Some Clarinetists

I've been playing clarinet for a while (okay, 8 or 9 years) but I really haven't been listening to a lot of good players. I started listening to my great uncle a little more (Sherman Kahn, maybe someone's heard of him?) and he has that sound that I really want. I started listening to Pete Fountain,...

  16. Trying to Buy a Bass Clarinet on Ebay for doubling

Hello Everyone, I'm in a jazz band down in New Orleans thats adding Bob Brookmeyer's celebration suite to its repetoire. One of the movements requires all the saxes to double Bb or bass clarinet. Since this coincides with a Chris Potter binge I'm on listening wise, I figured I would try and pick...

I've always wanted to play in the New Orleans "hot" style (aka dixieland), but have never had the opportunity to learn. I'd love to hear from people who do it for general pointers on how to approach it. Thanks.

I can't get it out... I learned the first octave (closed g-open g) on my own in a couple minutes, but the second one sounds wierd. Is this just a problem of my embouchure or something else. The clarinet's in good condition (Yamaha).

Hi It's getting very annoying now with cane reeds keep breaking while I play. In the last few weeks I had reeds break several times in the middle of rehearsals and concerts.
