I am starting my quest to find a Buescher alto to keep my Conn Tranny company. What do you like? What do you not like. Give me the scoop please! Gary
Never have I played a sweeter sounding alto. I didn't know what to make of having no front F so I played no altissimo in this clip. These things really have a unique character that I've never encountered before. It's like drinking regular water your whole life and then discovering crystal...
My 1951 aristocrat 156 came in from an ebay win yesterday, and tomorrow it goes in the shop. I dodged a big bullet, as the fellow who shipped it put 6 crumpled up sheets of newspaper randomly in the case, as padding, duct taped it shut (once around the seam, and twice around the body, "that'll hold...
Hal Kemp (http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS284&q=hal+kemp) (1904-40) led one of the most popular big dance bands of the 1930s. He typically led his own sax section on alto in highly showy arrangements, and was an artist endorser for Buescher instruments, appearing...
Hi guys. I need some help/advice on Buescher alto saxes. Last night I had the chance to play 2 Buescher altos. One was a Buescher 400 Alto Sax #561xxx ($895) and the other one was a Buescher True Tone Alto Sax #229xxx ($1100). Both of them were absolutely great, original lacquer, top playing...
Probably doesn't belong here, and no, this isn't my horn, but there's an original lacquer (or lack there of) Big B Tenor on eBay looking cheap right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/Brass-Buescher-Big-B-Aristocrat-Tenor-Sax-Saxophone-/300460829429?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f4dc6af5
I am sure there is a thread out there with a fix on this but I can't find it. My problem is the pinky cluster/C# pad/key is a tad lazy on my TH&C and my Series I tenors. It is the same mechanism on both rigs and often times that pad doesn't really want to close all the way. It is not a leak,...
Why get a Buescher horn? I know they're affordable, but what do you think makes a Buescher horn a quality vintage, and more importantly, what do you think makes a Buescher better than a Conn/King/Selmer/etc.?
Hello! Please excuse my poor english! I have had this old Baritone for 10 years and have decided to overhaul it and get a new neck for it, since the neck I have is old and beaten up. I was thinking of bying a gloger neck for it, since he offers necks for buescher baritones. The problem is that I...
Hello, i am in the market for a low cost, vintage alto saxophone, and have come across a Buescher Aristocrat on ebay that i am interested in, On the ad, it does not include a serial number, or the date of the instrument, i will email the seller for it, but in the mean time.... I noticed...
Please forgive me, I am not up on my vintage Buescher models, which is why I figured I would ask the experts. I have a student who is trying to decide if they should buy and overhaul the vintage Buescher they've had on loan or try out a newer, updated step-up instrument. I don't know exactly...
Need one. I have extra snaps.
Question. Should I order the standard Aristocrat set of pads from Musicmedic or should I measure every single keycup and order them individually?
Are Buescher 200s good for anything but boat anchors? - they're heavy enough!
I've owned a Buescher Super 400 tenor since my parents gave it to me for Christmas in 1962. The serial number is 384xxx. I've recently started playing the horn again, and would appreciate any information about it. The horn still plays great, IMHO. Is it a Selmer or Buescher? Roughly, what...
Hello, I own a Windsor Buescher alto sax serial number 383853. It is golden in color, with a little engraving on the bell. I bought it used in high school 1978 and played it a little but then not at all and kept it in good condition all these years. The action seems very good on it and it has...
Here is my Buescher Aristrocrat Alto 290XXX.
Alto, of course, seemingly done up as an offering to the memory of Mr. R. New engraving added too, loads of it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Buescher-Aristocrat-Alto-Sax-/120601428639 Seller/tech is Mark Aronson of Bettendorf, IA. He does great work, BTW, as I know from having him o/h a horn once (no...
If anyone has any idea - I've done some research on Ebay and online, and the price range varies quite a bit. Also, I can't find models for sale that are too close to this serial number, so it's hard to know what it should be priced around. It's apparently in good condition (still haven't seen it),...
I recently acquired via Ebay a 1945 "Big B" tenor relacquer, ser. #308271. I bought it as a player, so I'm not so concerned with its "value" being diminished by the relacquer. It feels LIGHT to me, though, relative to its size. My Selmer VI alto feels more solid and denser. Could the buffing...
Hi, There isn't much on here about Aristocrat 157s, with the back bell keys. Has anyone on here played one of these enought to really have a sense of their sound and feel? And how they compare to 156 and earlier Aristos? I am talking about tenors. Thanks, ed
My 1941 Big B alto has nickel-plated keywork. I haven't seen any horns with this finish on ebay or on saxpics. Was this finish more rare that just the regular gold lacquer?
The low C# on my big b alto seems to bind somewhere. I removed the entire lower stack and inspected the rod and posts and they look fine. When I put everything back together and tighten the rod back down, the C# binds. Has anyone had this problem before? Any advice would be great.
Just ran across this today in Seattle-area CraigsList. I'm not in the market, but this looks awfully good for the money (asking $1,100) from the crummy pictures. Maybe you vintage buffs can give some input. http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/msg/1865099931.html It's in my general...
I have an Aristocrat Alto that has been overhauled at least once back in about 1976. It is either a 335xxx or a 385xxx very difficult to read the serial. I played the heck out of it through college and then put it away (1988) in pretty worn out condition. My son is now playing and ready for an...
This Super 400 from right before the Selmer USA takeover looks like a lot of horn for the money. Thoughts on this, Buescher fans? Is this (assuming it's set up well) going to play and sound like it's TH&C big bothers? cheers, ed
Hi, I just purchased a 288xxx Buescher Aristocrat tenor. It's missing a part (pictured, circled in green where it should be). I've only played clarinet and not the sax, so I'm not sure what this part is called and better yet if it's readily available or available at all. I bought the horn for less...
i have a problem with the Conn 10M ergonomics especially the C# left hand little finger......hard to play is the Buescher Aristocrat better in that term ? its a long time ago i played one.....
Hi I am looking at the Top Hat. The horn was made around 1949-1950 and it is B11. Some repaired dents, re-soldering on some posts. What would be the market value of this one? Thanks for any input.
Hi all, I just bought a bundy 1 tenor (691XXX) and it sounds very goood! Identical to my conn nw tenor. I heard that bundy 1s are actually made by buescher ever since selmer bought over. Is that true? My horn is made between 1975 to 1980. It does look abit like trutone, the bell aspecially....
Hi All, Among my horns I have an Alto TT ca. 1930 and love it. I have a friend a retired Music Teacher who has asked me if I could sell his Buescher Alto for him, he bought (His Father) the horn new in NYC in 1954. He hs not played it regularly for forty years, since he has two Selmer Mk VI &...
Started a new thread in the manufacturing section about this fascinating Buescher find. Please post your thoughts there if you have any guesses about what the item is; http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?140539-Brass-Patterns-special-for-Paul-Whiteman-s-band!
Hi all, I'm curious as to who uses vintages Bueschers - working players. I'll have a chance (been going on a long time) for an Aristocrat I alto in September and I'm curious how they are regarding intonation, etc. compared to modern horns. I also get both extremes when I ask about...
So I have this Buescher Aristocrat Big B alto saxophone, serial number is 297232. It's lacquer is shiny, almost TOO shiny. And it's not that dark honey lacquer that most Buescher Aristocrat owners talk about. It's more of a Yamaha-yellow lacquer. Also: Engraving is not dull, but not very sharp....
For people with experience, what is your opinion of how well a 1950 Buescher tenor would work for modern music. I am playing on a Jody Jazz DV 10. I play a lot of top 40 stuff and funk. I need a modern sound (i.e. Whalum's solo from "I will always love you"). Considering trading for a...
My grandaughter has a Buescher flute, it plays well, seems modern, who made it please ?
I am a relatively new player and late bloomer. I have a Taiwan Vito tenor and a great interest in vintage horns. I just bought a Buescher 400 alto from the bay. I know never buy what you haven't played, but I have had good luck so far. I am excited and a little confused about this alto. It has no...
Yeah, it's unusual in a positive way in that it's a series IV C-Melody and it also has the original warranty card. On the down side, it appears to have the original pads in not wonderful condition, missing a number of bumpers and probably clanks to high heaven if it's even playable. Been relisted...
New plating option that I just hadn't thought about before. Double plated brass! http://cgi.ebay.com/Older-Buescher-Alto-Saxophone-Brass-Plated-/260619693407?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cae24ed5f
Is there an overlap of serial numbers between Big B's and 140/156 aristocrats? Saxpics says that they've seen a big b 334XXX and a 140 330XXX. The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking at an Aristocrat alto that is 333XXX. Would this more likely be a Big B or 140? Thanks.
I'm thinking about buying a 1940's 297xxx Big B model for $600, I want to know how the ergonomics are, and if the keywork is too "vintage." Also, what's your mouthpiece/reed recommendation for an alto Big B? Thanks, also feel free to describe your experiences with the horn! (Alto)
An appeal to the combined wisdom of Buescher lovers, technicians and any body with an opinion. problem: a year ago my beloved 2973~~ TH&C tenor arrived from the US , freshly re-padded by the vendor. Out of the box it played beautifully and intonation presented no obvious problems. I continued...
Okay, I did it. I'm hoping I didn't get hosed too badly. I bought on Ebay a 1945 Big B tenor, relacquered and looks beautiful in the photos. I paid $972, including freight. Supposedly recent overhaul with the relacquer. Where can I learn more about this model and its place in history, and how...
I'm looking at buying a Buescher 400 bari to add to the collection. The serial is 408xxx. That puts it after the Selmer buyout, right? I read that the quality of the bari around this time was still good bc they prob were still using pre-buyout parts in the making... Any truth to that? This...
Is this a decent horn? No engraving on the bell, looks similar to the 30's designed aristocrats (bell to body brace, Keyguards) but it is a 1962 model according to the serial # I have a couple of 50's aristocrat altos and I am interested in trying out a tenor.
Well I finally managed to pick up the horn I've always fiended after, the Buescher Aristocrat. I'm really happy with the tone, but I'm a bit confused between the serial numbers vs series… I have a horn with a SN 353xxx, which I believe to be a series iv, but the keys are still on the left side. ...
I'm researching this sax and would be glad of any information on them eg. how many were made, variations etc.I do have sight of one in the U.K. and would like to contact owners to discuss details. Thanks in anticipation...Nik.
Quick Question -- McLaughlin Group style: Aristocrat 381k: A sweet, punchy Buescher, or an early 60s Bundy II? Pat Buchanan...
if this sax is worth 350...and anything else that would be helpful? http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/msg/1750720137.html
Today I was lucky enough to acquire a buescher true tone tenor low pitch silver saxophone with the serial number 160XXX. I am guessing it dates back to before 1930's as it has a lower serial than a few of the same horns I found on here. What approximate year would this horn date back to? ...
