I had an overhaul done in 1991 and have had regular adjustments since then. It is an original lacquer horn with 75% of the lacquer remaining. The neck has no lacquer remaining, but I think ads to the great sound. Asking $3500.

I am somewhat new to the site, but don't let that discourage you from looking into this horn. PM me with questions.

"The material certainly plays a role. I do pay attention to the reeds, mouthpiece and saxophone (ligature doesn't seem to make much of a difference); and I am occasionally making equipment changes, trying out different things, etc. But, at the end of the day, I really don't think the equipment matters much at all. Your sound is in you, not the equipment. I think, with practice and familiarity, every one would eventually get their unique sound on any setup. There's nothing wrong with taking the time to fine tune all your equipment and get it dialed in the way that's most comfortable to you. But please, try not to obsess too much. Too much fixation with paraphernalia can distract you from the far more essential (if less tangible) aspects of music making."

My back-up horn is an ancient Bundy with almost no lacquer left. Looks awful but has a full and beautiful sound. The keys are the quietest I've ever experienced. I'm trying to date the instrument. According to Lars Kirsmer's Buescher/Bundy list, the sax was made c. 1919 given its 55,000 serial number. But a history of George Bundy states that he moved to Indiana in 1927. The horn clearly states Geo. M. Bundy, Elkhart, Indiana. Anyone have a clue?

10 Tracks Every Horn Player Should Transcribe

These are in no particular order but I decided to share my thoughts on some of the most informative playing i have ever heard and studied.

1. Tenor Madness(Coltrane/Rollins): This should be a give, Coltrane and Rollins combine for upwards of 20 choruses or so, and their contrasting styles will give you a lesson both in 16th note lines and melodic development.

2. Giant Steps(Coltrane): Another Trane tune, pretty much the definitive lesson in pattern playing.

3. Delta City Blues: Michael Brecker is a horn player everyone should check out and transcribe if they haven't already. If you haven't heard this tune check it out, and if you haven't transcribed it and learned it here's why you should. The intro and the melody are great for learning large intervalic leaps, as well as great for overtone practice (its interesting to play a melody with overtones). The solo is an uptempo blues that features Mike's standard 'out' style of playing.

4.Naima(Steve Grossman): I had to include something off of Steve Grossman's album Love is The Thing just because it is the album when his playing seemed to have an even mix of Coltrane and Sonny Rollins influences. This tune in particular has some very interesting lines in it. If you haven't heard of Grossman he's another guy to check out.

5.The Children Save The Children(Grossman/Liebman): Off of Elvin Jones' album Live at The Lighthouse, this is a really hard one to find a track for, and it's just as difficult to transcribe. Lieb is on soprano and Grossman is on Tenor. A true Tenor Battle with two legends trying to pipe each other. You can message me to get ahold of the track if you can't find it anywhere.

6. The Tortoise and The Hare(Bob Mintzer): I cannot say enough good things about Bob Mintzer's Playing. Simply Put he is my opinion the most melodic of the players from the Fusion era. This is off of the Yellowjackets Mint Jam album, it is available on Itunes, but if you want to check the solo out it is on youtube. I basically learned how to play straight 8's from transcribing this tune, and there is no better player to study than Bob Mintzer for straight 8th lines.

7. Cheesecake(Dexter Gordon): I chose this one because it was the first solo I transcribed and learned. If you are going to transcribe this do yourself a favor and transcribe the entire album, there is so much useful material on it.

8. This I Dig of You (Hank Mobley): It's from his album Soul Station, another one I have and would recommend transcribing in its entirety. He's called the middleweight of tenor players, with very even tone and very good time.

9. Cherokee (Sonny Stitt): Long Story Short, Stitt could play as fast as anyone (I'd put him above Parker as far as Bebop is concerned) and this is him at his finest.

10. Chromazone (Bob Berg): Bob sounded very Breckerish on this album, but it is an amazing solo nonetheless. I cannot remember which Mike Stern album this is off of, but it shouldn't be too tough to get ahold of. Uptempo jazz/rock tune, would be worthwhile learning the guitar solo as well.

Well that's my list. I would love to hear any additions people might have to this, as this is just one mans opinion.

Barnes was on alto and baritone, Abate on alto and flute and they were in front of a decent piano trio. It was a great evening (amazing in the jazz black hole that is South Lincolnshire) in a generally be-bop mood. Mostly standards, but with a nice blues from their 2007 album Birds of a Feather, which I bought at the gig and can highly recommend.

Catch either or both of them somewhere if you can!

A year or so ago I had a bit of time on my hands and decided to apply to my local Council's music education department in my hometown of Sheffield to do a bit of teaching .
I have few formal music qualifications except for Grade 6 flute , theory and a City and Guilds diploma in Delivering Learning I obtained at nightschool.
However I have a lot of practical experience. I've been earning a living in music since I left school. Been on the road a lot with many working bands for years. Been a published songwriter for 25 years solid without break with three major publishers Virgin EMI and Chrysalis my current publishers. I have made 2 albums in the US as an artist for Virgin working with leading US players and producers. I have written over 20 top ten records in Europe and the UK and many more hit album tracks in all genres . I continue to work with well known established artists. Have extensive studio and live experience. In my home town I am in personal contact with leading contemporary artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley etc..highly regarded successful world class artists and their management... I have filled in at Music Colleges for teachers and run a Summer School for songwriting. I could go on and on..
I put all of this in my application. I got this reply.

" Thankyou for your application unfortunately your Grades are not high
enough.

I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. Fortunately I am way too busy now to contemplate teaching. Any other people in the UK with real experience run into this ?

I am a very late bloomer who has been playing saxophone since April of this year (just under eight months) On Oct 1st my wife and I went to a big band concert (Ellington, Basie, Kenton etc) given by a local semi pro big band.

They played well. I enjoyed it so much, especially the tenor solos in the ballads, that I decided to compliment the players afterwards. We got talking about music. They asked if I played, and I explained that I had just begun. I was told that, if I was interested I could go along to listen to the rehearsals.

I have been doing this every week ever since. I was allowed to borrow the 2nd tenor folder, and take it home to practice some of the pieces. I have “kept a low profile” because most of the players are teachers or semi-pros who have been with this band for 20 years or so. Last week, both the conductor and the lead alto asked, “When will you bring your tenor, with you?” I laughed and said, “Maybe in a year or two”. ::TGNCHK:

At the end of the rehearsal the 2nd tenor told me that he would be away for a couple of weeks, and if the others agreed, I could sit in.

What an opportunity!

They have twenty or so titles in rehearsal. I have started to look at the 2nd tenor parts with my teacher, starting with the easier (or rather, less difficult ones)

Last night, I went along to the rehearsal, took my tenor with me, and actually played in the band! What an amazing experience.:):)

I was a bit concerned when I realised that the regular leader was not there, and a young Dr of Music was taking his place. We started off with the two Count Basie/Neal Hefti pieces that I could manage quite well, “After Supper” and ”L’il Darlin” and they went well. I had an incredible adrenalin rush, and my heart was pumping hard, but I sat there on my stool and tried to look like the cool tenor player I so much want to be. 8-)

We rehearsed some six or seven titles in two hours (including a coffee break) and he talked to us at length about section harmony, and about rhythmic interpretation. The conductor worked quite a lot with the trombone section separately, and on the couple of occasions when he asked the saxes to play a particular figure, I could manage it. He complemented us at the end as being a nicely balanced section.
