    I also believe its because most middle and high school band programs start saxophone players on mainly alto or tenor.
    Plus there's the fact that it can cost a little bit more to find a decent bari.

    Very strange indeed and I always wondered how a flute was woodwind until my wife explained that early flutes are made of wood, reeds are not wood so I guess a sax is a grasswind instrument.
