Does your Conn alto have any words/pictures/? engraved on the bell?
Have you tried the serial number list on the Conn-Selmer website?
Many people find that list to be quite helpful.

As with every other horn that need identifying.....Photos are very helpful.

It probably is a newer model. Does it have left side bell keys and shooting stars engraved?

It's a 14M Conn Director student model commonly nicknamed "Shooting Star".

Are you saying that the ONLY numbers in the serial number read C98 1, because a proper, 5 digit serial number beginning with a "C" usually denotes that it was made in 1963/64.

Does it have wire keyguards, or sheet metal?

Here is one off of Ebay currently:

Horns of this year of manufacture could also have wire keyguards like this one on Saxpics.com (A 50's era model, but the design w/ wire guards is identitical):

Again, these are very commonly available student model horns, with varying opinions on their worth (as instruments). The monetary value is relatively modest.

From my understanding, the 50M was a Vito/Beaugnier made horn, branded by Conn as a 50M, and given the same Shooting Star engraving treatment and sheet metal keyguards of the 1964 and later Director models.

Although they are not exactly the same horn, both the Conn 14M and 50M served the same purpose as a student model, and are worth about the same.

Does it look like this?

This is a 1969 Conn "Director" student model made in Nogalas, Arizona, USA with the shooting star engraving. These are consider very sturdy horns but with a lack-luster tone. The later Nogalas, Mexico saxophones are very different.

I have a Conn platte mate, from 1930, is anti ergonomic, and sounds good. In the back says Elkardt Indiana, and I buy very cheap, so I buy to make an ornament.

Hey Silvio, if you're not going to play it, I'm sure there are people here who might like to buy it from you - me for one!

If you are referring to the white button on the low C keyguard (also found on the low Eb and B/Bb guards), that is simply a plastic, faux mother of pearl ornament found on the later Director models with sheet metal guards, and serves no purpose other than decorative.
