I currently play on a Phil-Tone Link TE, and while it's good, I don't think it's the sound I'm looking for. What mouthpiece that I can obtain for less than 300 can get a Florida Link/Dexter Gordon-ish tone? And please don't turn this into a lecture about how practice is more important, I already know that lol.
And I'm not looking for an exact copy, because there is none, I'm just asking what mouthpieces can achieve that sort of tone.

Try a bunch of modern NY Links with a buzzy reed.
I'm Liking a 6* NY STM with ZZ 3.5's for that huge "old time" sound.

A new link, either STM or NY may satisfy your needs although it's best to try a number of them and pick out the best as they aren't the most consistent...or for under $300 you could probably get a new metal link and get it reworked. Also search for the Phil Barone NY thread, he has a special going on those right now that I think is under $300, they are modeled after the double ring florida links, which could be what you are looking for. For a bit over the $300 price range you could probably find a Lebayle LR or LRII which are quite nice pieces, in the link-ish style. The LR has flatter sidewalls though and a longer baffle than the links, giving it more projection and focus. I haven't played the LRII but I've heard very good things...from photos it looks like he rounded the sidewalls out some and put more of a true rollover baffle on the LRII, which is closer to the Link design. There are other options out there too I'm sure but that's what comes to mind at the moment. Peace- Mike

A regular STM with the reed of your choice(not too soft) take in a fair amount of the piece and blow from your diaphragm through an open throat and you'll sound just like Dex..guaranteed after several decades.

I really dug the metal Lebayle "jazz" model.

I second the recommendation for the $250 Barone NY (search for the thread, it's a steal!)

its a $250 Barone "Jazz" model, but yeah, that should cover you. Go look in "Mouthpieces for sale" -- he posted there.

I would go and pick up a modern STM link which runs for about $125 last i checked and send it to brian powell (www.mouthpieceguys.com) which will cost around $100. Brian and Erik are the guys that make the mouthpiececafe series and theyre both really skilled. When you get it back the link will be as close to a florida link as a modern one can be. I've heard a few of his links side by side with a $800 JVW florida link and they are almost equally good (imho).

That's good advice, too. I play a Brian Powell-refaced HR Tone Edge that you wouldn't believe. Awesome. I'll take it over any vintage super-$$ slant sig.
