Hello there

I play bari in a 7-piece swing-blues-jump combo and would like to know what you guys think about RPC mouthpieces for bari and for this kind of music.

At the moment I play a 1931 Conn transitional bari with a Link Tone Edge 7* and #3 Ricos. I really like that dark sound with some edge when needed.

I also like the sound Doug James (former Roomful of Blues bari player) gets from his horn (he uses RPC mouthpieces).

Has someone experience with these mouthpieces?

Any suggestions are welcome

I sometimes use a RPC .125 on bari, its a good bigband section piece, fat, dark sound.I find it too dark for soloing though.

Another mouthpiece you should consider is Lamberson DD model,high-baffle mpc,it has the guts and cut needed for R&B.

I had an RPC 110 for my Buescher Big B bari and enjoyed playing it but had intonation trouble. I play in a community band and had the thing all the way on the edge of the cork and still couldn't keep in tune with the group. The chamber was simply too small for my vintage bari. I think Ron is working on a larger chambered piece, so you might just call and talk to him about it.

I don't think that an RPC mouthpiece would be too dark for soloing. If you're listening to great bari players like Doug James (Duke Robillard Band, formerly Roomful of Blues) or Andy Rowley (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy), they don't seem to have any difficulties to get through with their RPC mouthpieces.

Doug James uses Fibracell reeds. Would they work on a Conn transitional bari in combination with an RPC mouthpiece? Haven't tried Fibracell yet.

Any thoughts on Conn Tranny + RPC + Fibracell are appreciated.

Let the good times roll

Mr.Low,I've used RPC .125 for bigband recording and live `nd it works great for the section stuff, big and fat sound, very balanced. However, for R&B and solos I still think its too dark, personally I want more edge, brightness and volume for solos but this is personal preference.Lamberson 8DD works better for that, for me that is.Bootman uses a 8DD on a Conn Tranny and loves the combination.

I recently got in a Conn 26xxx bari( on consignment), and get a great sound on it with my RPC .150 . This mouthpiece has worked well for me in every situation, it may measure huge, but is as easily playable as any bari mouthpiece I have ever tried.

Mr Low
I'm playing a RPC 125 copy by Ed Pillinger;I had it from Bootman.
It sounds good on my 1932 tranny bari with a Rico Royal 4 reed, and it blows easier than the Links I was playing before to have it.
Come here and try it! I am in center Italy, not so far from your home.
You're welcome

It's really funny, but I'll be in Italy from April 3 until April 11. I will stay at the "Fattoria Montelucci" near Arezzo (near Firenze). Is your home far away from Firenze or Arezzo? If not we could arrange a meeting somewhere. That would be nice.

Tell me how you think about it.

Ciao GianPaolo

you can contact me via Email if you want: evamatze@bluewin.ch

I've just asked my wife and she would be happy if we could visit you. She plays tenor saxophone. Maybe we can come and meet you after our sax week in Arezzo. That would be on Saturday, April 10.

We also have a day off on Wednesday, April 7 if this is better for you. But we couldn't stay for very long as we have to travel back to Arezzo that day.

If we came on April 10, we could stay for a few days and have a few Chiantis and blow the Blues with you - if you'd like to.

Buona notte
