thats a Buescher stencil
asking price is a little steep, but that depends on the playing condition.

Thanks, SearjeantSax!

Here is what the owner said he had done to this sax:

Conn 6M Stencil - Sherwood Master

This horn was made by Conn.

Silver plated with gold wash bell.

This was my personal alto sax. I recently overhauled it as follows:

1. Ultrasonically cleaned, polished
2. Dents removed, body straightened, posts aligned.
3. Keys swedged to remove all play
4. Key cups leveled and aligned
5. Tone holes leveled
6. New rods, pivot screws, and post set screws
7. New blued steel needle springs
8. Precision Pads
9. Over-sized metal resonators
10. Synthetic corks and felts
11. Key height adjusted for best balance of pitch and tone

Included are many extra pads and resonators you can use for future repairs.
This overhaul would normally cost $1000.00

He is not getting any bites at $450 on Ebay. Still think price is too high?

Thanks,

Vinnie

sounds quite good,
i am sure its not a conn, no mercedes low c guard for example, but should be a great player with that overhaul and is a nice looker.

No Mercedes keyguard down there, so probably not a Conn. THEN, i compared it to my son's Aristo, and his Pan Am.... that key above the right hand pinky table is identical to his PA, not his Buescher, and some other stuff looks more Conn than Aristo.... another one of these hybrid guys from Elkhart? But same side bell keys, and sounds like it's fully overhauled.... if it's as good as my son's PA, it's a good horn for that money, i'd say.

must be a good player though with that monster overhaul, if it doesnt play worth $450 then theres something very wrong.

Some quick research showed both Buescher and Martin making Sherwood horns; nothing listed for Conn.

If this horn has post set screws, it's a Conn and nothing else.

the LH pinky table looks like a Conn,
the alt F sharp does not look anything like a Conn, or the thumb rest, or the key guards, or the strap hook, or the bow brace,

hmmmm

sigh .... SS, see my post above.... A stencil horn could have all sorts of cosmetic custom-ordered bits soldered on (braces, thumbrests, guards, straprings, etc. are well into the cosmetic category) but if it has PSS, it is 100% purebred Conn. No ifs, ands or buts (or hmmmms). The alt-F# is old-fashioned Conn New Wonder style, btw.

Not to say I'd agree this is a 6M, though; I'd want to see the LH spatula mechanics at a minimum, otherwise this is a 14M stencil with some custom bits.

Not to ruin the bidding [or lack thereof] for whoever was checking on this, but here's the lsiting with more pix..... don't know if you can see the keys needed to make further ID.

Still think it looks like a good horn for the dough, if the overhaul is as stated.
So, for those interested [me!] what's the differences between a 6M and 14M when looking at these stencils?

I guess the value is $450+$50S&H.
That's what I paid for it.

Hope he's legit. Wish me luck...

I had a Selmer in high school (graduated in 77) and my 1 year of college as a music major. But it got stolen while I was in the Navy. I'm not expecting this to be a Selmer, but I haven't played in about 30 years and got the itch.
Well, my ex- did buy a cheap soprano for her clarinet playing daughter. I got to play it for a few months before we split up. It had TERRIBLE intonation, at least a 1/2 step high from G to A. :(

The case is worth $1-200...

I'll let you know how I like it.
Maybe I can upload some more pics when I get it. I really don't think it's a Conn stencil, but he said the most obvious sign was the post locking set screws which this horn has.

I got a Otto Link copy ??? mouthpiece from the Violin King ebay store.
hmmm guess I'll need reeds... I've been out of this for 30 years, any suggestions? Any new reed ideas being marketed?

Best of luck! Looked like a nice horn to me, great overhaul, but I'm a bit of a cheapo.

If you haven't played for 30 years, I understand. I was out of it for about 20, then they sucked me back in!

I would suggest a nice, open mouthpiece at first with 2-2 1/2 reeds so you don't get frustrated. I had great luck with a Yamaha 4C and 2 1/2 reeds; I prefer Hemke reeds. I now use a Meyer 6M and #3 Hemke reeds.

But, beware! I, as well as probably most of my brothers on SOTW are on the eternal search for the "best" mouthpiece and "best" reed set up. It never ends. There are many, many posts on this. In the end, the "best" mouthpiece and reed is like a sax; it's the one you like best.

I will second that, no doubt at all.

3rd. It's a CONN - PanAm style Conn. I had a Sherwood Master tenor very much like it. Very good solid horn. The last Sherwoods were made about 1955, and the Masters were pro quality. Hard to find much info on them.
