makes me sick that does.
i have sent him a very long complaint. i hope he comes to his senses.
imagine, it saw all the great eras of jazz and would be getting on for its 100th birthday in its long musical life, but suddenly its life as an instrument is over. i dont know if i have explained that how i see it in my head or not, but that makes me really sad.
its like turning the white house into apartments.

YUCK.
one of them looks slightly remeniscent of the body section of a buescher straight alto.

I know this guy sells saxes on ebay so maybe he figured it was worth more as a lamp. I think it is OK if a body has a bent tube or something wrong that is too expensive to repair. Strange as I have a Holton like that in playing condition for the same price! Bulbs not included but it does have a case, neck and mouthpiece....

Nice teardrop front F model too. It has the serial number visible though--another one for the registry.

YOU DON'T DO THAT TO SAXES LIKE THAT. You just don't!

No kidding the horn plays so nice now I can't imagine it played poorly before being 'lamped' with as much as it cost I could probably actually break even if I decided to sell it.
Is that Holton a Weidolph (sp?) model? I see it's a alto in low pitch, why would they do that to a usable horn?

My theory is that it was missing the neck, and the guy didn't feel like searching for one, so he crucified it.
It's still a damn shame, and I want to cry every time I see that VI picture also...
Good for you bringing it back!

^^ apparently not :
i emailed him and heres his reply
Very kind of you to give me your opinion.
However the Holton sax was never a very good instrument
compared to the other saxophones of the same period. Several
music repairmen friends from around the state gave me the
opinion that making a lamp out this instrument would only
improve it's usability & value. Holton made many fine
instruments, but saxophone was not one of them. The
craftsmanship was very good but sound & playability did not
compare to other saxes of the same period. Making it into a
lamp preserved the historical value & craftsmanship & kept it
from the junk pile. PS: I am also a saxophonist & have been
playing professionally for 60+ years. Believe me, I too
appreciate a good sax. If I find a vintage quality instrument,
my first objective is to have it restored & hopefully played
again. This sax was very attractive & deserved to be preserved
but as a lamp. Note: you could always buy it, restore it, place it
in your music room, or have it as a keepsake. It could easily be
repaired -then you could pay it whenever you want.

Another "expert" who relys on second hand information as to the playability of Holton saxophones. I'm sure neither he nor his expert friends ever played one. Its similar to what is happening to historical library books: the engravings are cut out for sale and the book is left on the shelf. Note all the 18th and 19th century engravings for sale. My guess is that he tossed the neck in the junk pile.

i found a guitar shop who also crusify saxes as lamps and they had several old intersting looking possibly german Left side bell key horns and they said they toss the cases, necks and numerous mouthpieces:shock: into the trash

Hmmm, I wonder what my little brother would tell me if I were to ask him to let me turn his 1950's era Les Paul into a wall clock?
I think I agree with Bruce, if its worth more as a lamp due to some defect, why not? The thing I was most amazed with is the condition of the pads. They look new! Maybe this horn was a lemon before the overhaul, then a lemon after the overhaul and then he just broke down and went the illuminated fixture route.

No defect with that sax--go play one set up properly and provide your opinion. Sax lamps are lame when they're Selmers, and they're still lame when they're antique Holtons.

I sold a 1923 Buffet Clarinet Missing two keys, and needed a repad but it didn't have a single crack in it for 170 bucks. Idiot that bought it did the same thing this guy did to it. I wanted to scream...
Toss the Necks in the TRASH!!!!!!!!!! I have some .38 rounds left if you have the gun..
I still need a Neck for my Holton Tenor. I have some RooPads Waiting until I have a complete Horn to work on.. :(

I know an elderly tenor who has willed his body to science. Perhaps his neck will fit your Holton when the time comes. It would make a "monster" player.

Saxophones make ugly lamps.

A Nazi doctor in WWII made lamps using human skin. That was horrible.
A crime against humanity. To make a lamp from a saxophone is a crime
against music. We need a Geneva Convention against this.
Or PETMI - Peope for the Ethical Treatment of Musical Instruments.
No joke - this is really sick.

Maybe we missed the point. There are some players who should be made into lamps.

I contacted the guy too... I was curious to find out if the bow of the sax was SMASHED flat to sit on the base... Here is his response...
"The Corian base has been ground out so the sax bottom sits in
the groove. There is a hole drilled in the bottom of the sax to
fit a threaded rod & attach the sax to the base securely. I
hope this info is helpful.
Don"
I also noticed that you cannot make bids on this horn... there is just a buy it now... too bad... I'll buy it for a couple bucks and fix it up!!!!
