Hey folks, I'm in need of assistance. I am going to be divesting myself of some project horns via eBay or the classifieds here, so I want to be able to give as much information as possible.
I've got a Rudy in the 35XXX range, would this put it in the beginning of the production, or the end?
If I have been reading the info correctly would this be around 1930?
Can anyone pinpoint this a little better?
I know I can't.
Thanks,
dv

The discussion of serial numbers and years of production continues. The following is my personal view based on a summary of all information available and result of a method which minimizes contradictions. For details and differences in opinions see the postings in 'Holton serial number registry'.
Note: serial numbers of the Rudy Wiedoeft model follow the common set of Holton serial numbers.
According to my provisional reconstructed SN list your Rudy (alto, tenor, other?) was probably built in 1929 (+/- one year at the present state of development). Production began most probably in spring 1928 with a number early in the thirty-thousend. Highest number seen was 40xxx, so yours is around the mid of the period of time the Rudy Wiedoeft model was produced.
Note that the R.W. C-melody production began in early 1925 with SN# 20xxx or a bit lower (see #104 R.W. list).

Yeah, the Holton "system" leaves a lot to be muddled through....
Thanks for helping narrow down the manufacturing window. I had thought 1929-1930, but I couldn't be sure.
I don't want folks who are looking for a funky Rudy Wiedoeft project horn thinking I'm being misleading.
Thanks,
dv
ps, it's an alto in really rough shape, but it shines up really well....
you could add it to the list if you'd like. SN 35664

Too bad about Holtons-- Your Rudy when fully re-built, would be an excellent player. Unfortunately, the cost of $400-800.00 is worth more than the horn. Someone will buy it off Ebay (hey--maybe me) and it will be repaired and played. Good luck!

I got it for roughly $200, with the hopes of getting it up to speed, but.....
It'll be listed for well under that price. I know I'll probably be lucky to get $100, but one can hope.
