We were rehearsing the other day, and I was telling the other musicians about bass saxophones, which some of them had never heard of. The drummer was most interested in the idea of a bass sax. At one point, he started laughing and asked me if anyone had ever made a bass sax that wrapped around the body like a Sousaphone. It certainly would be easier to stand up and play. Well, how about it? Has anyone ever built or designed such a horn?

I would be surprised if there were one. Sousaphone's only have 3 keys. Making a wrap-around sax with all the keys and rods the way they are seems like it would be ridiculously complicated.

Yeah, I think the toneholes and keys would get in the way.

If you're really curious I would PM Paul Cohen on this. He has one of the largest private collections of rare and unusual saxophones in the world.
