Hey again
I have yet another quick question. So I have used Rico Royal #3 reeds forever. I just bought a box of #3.5 and hate them. So it is time to buy another box (usually I buy 1 box of 10 a year and its gets me through).
So my question is, would you recommend me to stay with Rico Royal or Take a chance and try Vandoren? A lot of sax players in my school use the Vandoren and have beautiful sound... And I know that they are highly talked about...
I like the real gravel-y deep rough sound... what do you use and what would your recommend? btw, i play a Yamaha Bari.
Thanks... and let me know if that didn't make sense.... I have a habit of not...:D

I recommend that you try rico plasticovers, vandorens javas, Alexanders all works great, i dunt like the original one as much though. If you wanna have something for economics, i would say a bari star, or some other synthetic reeds. The bari sax isnt as descriminate and even not so great reed can sound pretty decent.

As far as I know, Vandoren has never made JAVAs for Bari. Never understood why. am I wrong?

You are correct, I use 3.5 ZZ for bari at this time, even though I play concert band music mainly.

You might want to just stick with Rico Royal. On bari, I don't think anything else is as good for a big, bold, jazz/r&b/rock sound. If you've been happy with Royal #3 reeds, it's probably just the fact that you switched to #3.5 that's giving you a hard time, not the brand.
Your mileage may vary, but I hate Vandoren bari reeds. Hate them. They don't feel right, they're expensive, they're resistant and stuffy. Some people love them a lot, though.

I am extremely! hesitant to use the plasticover reeds. I don't like the idea, i don't like the feel, and they just........ seem in a all around way a bad thing!
I don't play enough to really merit needing reeds that will stay forever anyways, and in my opinion the plasticover reeds should only be used if you need a reed to last..... thanks for the advice though...lol
I wasn't blaming the brand, i was blaming the strength. The only reason i was asking was that i figured if i was going to shell out more money this year than usual if i should put out a little extra if the vandoren were known for being better....

I love using Legere reeds on the bari. I use a Legere 2.5 strength. In fact I am using Legere on all my horns including my main horn (the alto). I think Legeres sound and respond better than reed. Maybe the very best reeds sound slightly better; however, most reeds in a box are not the very best. Every Legere that I've tried sounds fantastic.

Yep. Legere reeds are a life saver on bari.
