Hopefully the sax plays without much in the way of fixing, but I've budgeted $400 for repairs.

Looks like someone clipped off the G# trill key, but I doubt you'll miss it (though it can be handy to unstick G# on the fly). Did you get any pics of the engraving? It didn't go for the value of one with original lacquer, but just wondering if you've seen better pics. My guess would be that it was heavily buffed in the past as there's not even an outline of engraving showing in the pics. Just by the seller's language, you'll need new pads to get it playing; at the very least. When you do, get Noyeks for it.

I have a Conn tranny that I've played as my main sax for 10 years that I've been told is original even though it is heavily worn. I thought it was a relac because the engraving wasn't bold and I could barely see the serial number. The groves on the lefthand pinky were also almost worn smooth. Someone really played this sax for a long time before I got it. In the 10 years since I've had it, I've replaced just a few of the pads and had it adjusted just a couple of times. It seems that it never gets a leak or goes out of adjustment.
I bought the 10m because the color looked almost identical to my tranny. I hope it is original but I don't really care as long as the horn plays like a good 10m. Like any ebay purchase, I took a gamble. I hope all the horn needs is some pad replacement and some adjustment!

I'd have to say most vintage horns... that is more than 50%... advertised as "orginal lacquer" on Ebay, don't have it. It's just a buzz word sellers use to inflate the value of their horn; and many probably don't even know what it means. But if other bidders were convinced it was original lacquer, it would have sold for over two grand. Always ask for more detailed pictures.

I picked up the saxophone today (the seller lived 20 minutes from my house). The case was a very old selmer case. When I unwrapped the sax, the neck had the mouthpiece on just like in the picture from e-bay (a Woodwind Co steel ebonite D7 with scooped sidewalls). The sax had a few very small pings and only one joint may have been resoldered. As to the finish, it is only 40% but I don't think it is relacquered. The ingraving is sharp even though it has only a little lacquer remaining. The pearls on the keys are well worn. This sax has seen some heavy playing. Anyway, after I gave the seller the cash on the street, I couldn't help myself. I ran my fingers up and down the keys and while the pads were pretty old, I could almost hear that the pads had a good seal. So I put on the neck with the mouthpiece (which had some sort of reed attached), and gave a blow. Believe it or not, it played from high F to low B flat with ease (I didn't even wet the reed). I'll find out tomorrow if I get some disease.
On returning home, I put on my link and it played fantastic, very similar to my tranny which is my main sax. I think it may have even more character to the sound and the ergonomics are better.
I think I'll put $400 to $500 into this baby and will have a lifetime partner. I think I may be in love.

Sounds like a great score. Also, those old WW Co. mouthpieces can be very, very nice with older horns. Finding a 7 is pretty rare, as well as the D facing.

Grumps: I saw your post commenting on the Woodwind Company mouthpiece so I put on a Java 3.5 and FL lig on it and I played really great. I have a Lamberson J7 and a Phil Tone 105 and I think the WC D7 actually plays better on the Conn! It is more natural feeling with a great dark sound. The mouthpiece is really heavy and solid. It is in perfect condition (not a chip or scratch on it) although I think it has been played a lot by the prior owner of the 10M.
Double score.
