So I was really liking the Vandoren Java 3's on my AL4 mouthpiece, until I bought 5 boxes of the same brand and strength and saw that they were individually wrapped. I pulled some out and they were much harder/stuffier than the ones i played on before.
Anybody know where I can get the boxes that don't have indivdually wrapped reeds in them?

That's how they are making them now. Call around to a bunch of music stores and ask if they have any of the old packaging kind left. You might stumble onto a few batches that'll last you a few months.
I don't play 'em, so I can't speak to whether they changed at the time the packaging redesign. But yeah, I've seen those new individually wrapped reeds -- marketing gimmick, I suspect.

Soak em, rub em, sand em. = softer reed. I bought some 3's that were a tad too stiff. I just "adjusted" them to a 2.5

I would think a stiffer reed would make for a longer lasting reed. Plus I adjust my reeds with sandpaper after breaking them in.
