Anyone own an Anvil Case? Anyone have one for a Yamaha 62 Bari? Anyone every flown overseas caring an instrument in an Anvil? Any thoughts on their protective nature? I know they are heavy.

Anyone know what kind of case Mulligan used when he traveled overseas?

I have been approached about traveling to Australia for some playing opportunities and I need a case that will travel well and that can possibly be checked through to Sydney.

Any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

I know that this is by no means a complete answer, but here goes.

About a year and a half ago, I bought a YBS-62 from a SOTW member. He shipped it snugly fit in the original Yamaha 'coffin' case, in a box that he had made so that it was just under the size limit for USPS. The bari made it to Hawaii with no damage.

I have no idea whether I was just lucky, or those coffin cases are really good. Also, I have no idea whether the 'handlers' at USPS are any better than 'handlers' with the airlines.

I know a guy who has an Anvil case. He packs his bari into a gig bag, puts the gig bag into the Anvil, and checks the whole thing. And, according to a mutual friend (who does both of our repairs), the horn suffers some damage on nearly every trip... in at least one case, it arrived unplayable.

I don't get the question often, but when I was hit up last year to play in Adelaide, I explained that the only way I could do it would be to either arrange for an instrument there, or ship a horn ahead, fully insured against loss or damage. The gig evaporated for other reasons, but that's been my policy ever since.

Here is a much cheaper option than an Anvil case. I purchased a used SKB hardshell golf club case and packed my bari in a padded gig bag inside, with lots of eggcrate foam. The sax made it through 4 flights on our trip with no damage.

I have my old coffin case. It no longer has any of the metal guards, is missing one hinge, three handles, and one lock. This is from five years of carrying the bari around in it. The case started to fall apart almost immediately. I talked to a Yamaha rep about it. He said for another $800.00 I could get it repaired. I have a BAM now.

I am seriously thinking of turning down this gig. The flight from Milwaukee to Sydney has got to be long and if there is nothing out there to protect my horn during transit, why go?

I would love to know what Mulligan did. He went over to Europe and Asia and South America thousands of times. I know he did not get another horn for the gigs in the other countries or have his shipped ahead. How could he? There has to be something out there that will work other than a golf bag and some additional packing. Or does no one travel with a bari anymore? What does Carter use? Claire Daly? The Basie Band? The Mingus Big Band?

This is too depressing.

Hit these guys up. I bet they could make you something that would work.

Sounds like your coffin case lasted about as long as my first selmer alto case.:)

Mulligan had a huge Anvil case for his bari, I saw a picture of his bari someplace and it was sitting by the open anvil case. Pictured below.

I had a case made for my bari years ago. I used a company in Dallas called Calzone Cases (they make Anvil-type cases). As someone mentioned above, I put my horn in a leather Reunion Blues bag, and put the bag in the heavy-duty case.

I traveled on the road for a few years (horn in case going under the bus every night) including a few trips to Europe and Japan. Never any damage to the horn. I had a similar case made to hold alto and tenor. My only regret is not springing for them to put wheels on the darn things!

These days I'm kind of in a quandry. I don't really need the heavy cases any more, but there are years' worth of stickers from all over the world on them so I can't bring myself to sell them... :|

Calzone...which is the company who owns Anvil. Now is producing a full production line of flight cases for sax including Bari. They are in their first production run and should be shipping in the next few weeks.

You can order them hornsales.com

If you have any question feel free to email me.
