i'm using a yana metal alto #7. and i found it not too bright and doesn't project that much. but what i gather from my friends and net it say it is a bright mpc.
anyone have any idea :?:
btw, i also cannot play it if my reed is softer that a #3 in v16. why this mpc cannot play with soft reed?

I wouldn' say it is especially bright. I used one for a while including for playing classical. For me the Yana metal is especially characterful though its a good all-round piece. Put it this way, if you want 'bright' I can think of many brighter pieces than this.

Whoops, I meant to say it is NOT especially characterful, its a bit bland and generic as opposed to having a definite sound. Not necessarily anyhting wrong with that of course.

I used to play a yani metal on alto prior to finding a Morgan. I can definately see how the Yani is described as "lacking color." I just got mine out for the first time in a long time and the tone is dry and lacking overtones. That sound quality does not make the mouthpiece bad. Its a sound many really like. The reason why I never really liked it much was because it took too much work blending in sections. Its not overly bright but it is different and for that reason it cuts through sections easier than blends. My Yani was also reed fussy. When i had a good reed it was an awesome mouthpiece. When I had an average reed it was a nightmare. My Yani played best with a winslow lig. If you want a Guardala type tone minus the gobs of edge this is a good piece. I like the metal yanis on soprano better than alto. However, A lot of players sound great on a metal yani on alto

I've got the one in gold over silver, it has a tad more color to it. I'm using it with Alexander DC #3s right now, though most of them feel on the hard side with the 7 facing. Can't get it to work with V-16s at all, personally. I'm wondering if the new ZZs will do the trick. I like the idea of the 'blank canvas' on which to make your own sound but am not sure how good I sound on it.

I have a Yani Silver Metal in 5. I coulden't get it to work at all with V-16's either. I've found for me Rico JS Filed 2M's or 2H's work best for me.

yap. now, i really dont eat vandoran. cos its expensive and damm bad in consistency. i can get nice sound and control from rico royal. consistency is 7 out of 10.

I use 1 1/2 orange box rico's on my Yani 7M. When i get a good reed the mouthpiece is very responsive, and like many have said, the sound is a bit plain. I'm looking to change mouthpieces, the Yani is not too good for overtones. I need to wait till i get my new sax until i begin looking for another mouthpiece tho.:(

I think the 1 1/2 Rico Orange is way soft for the Yani 7. I'd use at least a 2.5 Vandoren, probably a 3 - and the Rico are softer for a given number than Vandoren. You will struggle with overtones on a really soft reed like that, I wouldn't expect much projection or very good intonation either. I know its each to his own, but that looks a bit extreme to me. If you have a teacher, see what they think. BTW, I love your 'Miles Behind' name - one of the best on the forum.

I used to play a metal yani 7 (alto). Then I switched away from it because I hated the way it felt in my mouth. It was ALWAYS cold, and I like the mouthpieces to be closer to the temperature of my mouth. It was the worst "piece-money spent" ratio ever. 330 CND plus tax, and I hated the way it sounded. It turned me off metal for a while, but now I'm experimenting again with them. It always sounded like "vanilla" to me. Plain, but not terrible. Just no character to it. It kind of stood out like a bad actor in a great movie.

two years ago i'm using it as my main piece. i changed because of lack of tone characteristic and sounds to dirty especialy when playing soft. 2 days ago i try it back to see if i would change my mind. Guess What.............................................. .................................................. ............................i put back into my drawer after 10 minutes of playing. same story. But i have a friend sound damm good with this mpc, close to sanborn style and tone. so, mpc is really a personal thing.
