So, I will be acquiring a Buescher soprano (probably a straight model) soon, and I was wondering about cases. I know the market is quite different for soprano cases. I was first looking at a protec, but people have reported that they are not as good on soprano, and that the horn can move in the case. I was also interested in the BAM hip hop case. Is that hard shell or soft shell? Basically, what are my options in a good, protective case with enough storage space for avintage straight fixed neck soprano? Thanks!

The hip-hop is the lightest soprano case around weighing in at a mere 1.8 lbs. It is meant to be used with the Trekking alto case so it has a "soft belly" to attach to the Trekking case and hard outer shell.

You mean it has a section that's soft on the outside? That's not good.

Yep, that's because it's designed as an add on to the alto trekking case. It still functions well as a stand alone case however. I use one for my 1.5 mile walk to church every sunday.

Hmm... so if it took a hit to the soft section, would the horn be easily damaged?

Any more help? Are my only options walt johnson, protec, and bam?

I slightly modified a Protec case for my TT and like the results very much. To me, the greatest objection to the protec was the minimal support just beneath the neck of the sax. I cut a piece of dense foam rubber, wrapped it in black cloth and wedged it in the case to better support the upper portion of the body. Super easy to do, no glueing or sewing, and it is a big improvement.

I also have the Protec case for my Buescher straight TT sop. It's well built and solid, and I think it would protect the instrument well. My only (minor) complaint is that because the case is so narrow, when the case is open, the weight of the lid causes the case to tip back, rather than stay flat. Otherwise, a very good case.
