I'm getting ready to sell some vintage hard rubber sax mouthpieces. Two questions:

1.) What's the best way to remove calcium carbonate deposits without damaging or discoloring the mouthpiece?

2.) Is it possible to restore the original black appearance to areas that have turned brown from oxidation?

Wow, would I be grateful for a proven method or two. Thanks in advance, ladies and gentlemen...

I wonder if that stuff that made to remove deposits from bathroom fixtures, CLR, would do the trick?

I don't know what CLR works like but I bet it is pretty caustic ! I use a diluted solution of vinigar at about 30% and it will lift the crude so it can be wiped off with little effort.
I also just tried some tire dressing gel made by Meguiars called Gold Class Endurance on some green and faded mouthpieces.
The label does not list contents but it says to just rinse if you get it in your eyes and doesn't even mention what to do if you drink the stuff so I don't think it is very caustic. It smells like fruity grape candy so I could see some kid drinking it, might mix well with vodka! Anyways it does not make the piece look like new but it does reduce the fadding quite a bit and does give it a like new luster!
Gotta blow......

Spoke too soon! This tire dressing gel will get rid of the fadding if you keep applying it. Makes the pieces look like new.
