What do you guys know about thet Rico Reed Vault? Does it work with any sized reeds? (alto, tenor, bari)
Do you like it? Does it work well? Or, is it a pain in the butt?
Feel free to PM me.

Works fine. I got a few for free about 9 months ago. If you want to save some money, just buy a sandwich tupperware container. Same thing, holds more reeds. I'm not a big fan of the rico vitalizer system, but you can always buy those little humidity packets and use them with tupperware... oh, and these packets are available in larger sizes for larger containers at tobacco shops.

Steve,
Thanks for the info. I use a Vandoren Hygrocase, but wanted something for another horn and thought this was a more "affordable" alternative. It does look like tupperware :-)

The rico reed Vault....isn't that where they have the formula stored for the reed that never goes bad (and yes it exists, but rico would go out of business if they actually produced it)

The "reed vaults" will hold any size reed. Not a pain at all to use. It's just a container; you throw your reeds in along with a humidity pouch, and that's it.
The containers are actually made by a company called Lock & Lock. The reed vault is the container in the upper right shown here http://www.organize.com/6pclunchset.html, so essentially it really is a "Tupperware" container. How did I figure this out? The Rico reed vault has an adhesive label on it that says Rico Reed Vault that is attached to the top of the lid. Mine was put on a bit lopsided, so I decided to remove it. (I'm anal that way.) Molded into the lid was the following:
Lock &
Lock
Open lid prior to use in microwave oven.
Only reheatable, not for cooking.
Having said all that, they do a good job and hold any size reed. Be careful with the 73% humidity packs; my reeds were getting moldy. I switched to the 58% and haven't had a problem since.
BTW, I moved this thread to the appropriate area.

Why would anyone want to microwave their reeds?
Sorry, couldn't resist
Been thinkin of the Tupperware and pipe tobacco/cigar humidifier myself too.

So what you are saying is that I could buy a container with a Rico sticker for $14.00 or a six piece set for $7.00. Is the sticker worth $7.00 and does it do something to help protect the reeds?

Just use a Tupperware container and a sponge soaked in Listerine.

Listerine smells bad. I prefer the smell of mold.

though listerine prevents mold, i've heard it makes reeds wear out faster?

That's why you should let your reeds dry. They don't get mouldy.
This is especially true if you play EVERY DAY.
Like my Grandad used to say about his lack of chest hair:
'Grass don't grow on a busy street'.
