Lately I tend to use Java 3's though sometimes 3.5 Hemkes which play a little louder and meatier but die out quickly. I think the Hemkes are a tad softer....which is totally opposite from Rico's chart. But I don't believe their chart is accurate for all the sax sizes (SATB.)

Anyway, if I want a reed for soprano that is halfway between Hemkes and Javas, what would be a good choice? Rico Select Jazz? If so, what strength should I try to be similar to Java 3 or Hemke 3.5. Rico's chart says RJS 3H would be equal to Hemke 3.5, but I have a funny feeling the 3H would be harder. Do the RJS reeds on soprano last longer than Hemkes? Comments and advice welcome.

I'd rather focus on soprano experience, as I have found the number equivalents are different for different size saxes.

Thanks.

I have never played Hemke's on soprano but have played Java's and RJS. I recently switched from Java 3 to RJS 3S and like the 3S's a lot. I would say the 3S is a hair hard than the Java 3 but also a little darker and fuller. Good luck.

I've had good luck with the RJS 3S also. On a .063 or about 7 mouthpiece. They last quite awhile too, in my experience.

I am playing them on a .065 if that helps.

I just discovered a box of Gonzales 2 3/4 soprano reeds I forgot I had. The first one I tried worked out nicely!

Gonzales runs pretty hard for alto and tenor for those that don't know.
