Sometimes I have to do private gigs by myself w/midi or mp3 playback. I'm using a mini-disc player now, but I've seen them skip on a buddy of mine, so I would like to go with something more stable. Anyone have any ideas? I'm looking at mp3/audio players now, and also the Tascam PocketStudio.

MP3 would probably be a good bet, or how about just burn a CD? There are all kinds of portable players for sports purposes that have a lot of anti-skip technology built into them, those ought to be pretty stable for a gig, no matter how hard you rock the house

BTW, I checked out your website and dig your sound? What setup are you using on alto? Sounds great. You ought to post something in the Recordings by SOTW members thread, I keep trying to get more action going there. You've got some great sounding stuff. Are those home recordings, or did you do them in a studio?

very unusual for a mini disc player to skip since the anti skip is inherent in the machine.I use mine in the car, and have had it drop off seat onto the floor with nary a skip. Maybe just time for a new one? if it works well otherwise, but if you have other problems/concerns then maybe it is time for a change.

MD's aren't prone to skipping when playing back, but they're very sensitive to shocks when you're recording.

FrankD: Thanks for the kind words! I was using a Yamaha Custom with a Beechler S8S rubber, Vandoren Java 3 reeds, and an Eddie Daniels Lig. I posted my music on the old SOTW site and got some nice comments there too.

The reason I ask the question is that I saw a friend play an outdoor gig with a duo and an MD player and it skipped. His might have been old though. It screwed up the whole tune.
I've been looking for MP3 players, but I can't find one with a line out. They only have headphone jacks, which would make for pretty crappy live PA sound.

check ebay for refurbished units, I have an older Sony MZ-R37( I got that way for less than $100) that has line in and out, as well as a mic in and a headphone jack.

Beware on some units Sony left out the attenuation switch (like mine) so electret condensor mics will distort. I use dynamic mics and it saounds great.

www.minidiscaccess.org has some good information, and there is another site I think Merlin pointed us to a while back, might just be minidisc.org or something like that.
