i would just like to say thanks to all you guys and gals out there that give such great info. after weeks of reading and re-reading your picks and dislikes for tenor mouthpieces, i finally went to the music store today. i didn't bring my series lll though.

i stand to say that i gave the front desk guy ample warning.
i looked him straight in the eye and told him that tomorrow i would be trying out EVERY single tenor mouthpiece he had in stock. the opened, sealed, EVERYTHING!

i think he wet himself.

it's funny to talk to the music shop employees that have no idea about sax mouthpieces.
i have a feeling he's going to make sure that he is not there or the sax guy is tomorrow.

after reading some horror stories about links, bergs, and lakeys, i want to try them all.
alas, there is no other way.

thanks again guys/gals. id have to say that seeing all the sax info here makes feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Now THAT's what I like . . . you just gotta go there and make the decision yourself!! The only problem is that after you've done all of that, you'll be back again and again trying different pieces and buying more pieces and it never gets any better. But at least you're going to make the effort. Good luck. DAVE

Once you decide on a particular make and model of mpc, make sure to try out various different facings. Make sure to bring at least two reeds you like and have broken-in, as well as a couple of new reeds: one harder and one softer than you usually play (if you have them.) After you find the one you like you should probably experiment w/ a couple of different ligatures, especially as your current ligature may not fit the mpc you choose. As you see, this could take you hours to do, but hopefully a couple of mpcs will just jump out at you, and others you will noticably dislike. Also remember that the mpc you like for YOUR sound may be different from the one you should be playing in concert band, etc. My guess is that your band director might have more than a few misgivings if you show up to band class w/ shiny Dukoff, Link, or any other metal mpc. As manx SOW members have posted, today's new mpc materials have made the different in sound between a metal mpc and a "hard rubber"/ composite mpc almost nil (and the HR/composite will be much more versatile for other bands, music, etc.) Good Luck.

BAH they can buff out any teeth marks or hickeys you leave on the mouthpieces! ;)
