Tim,

Breathtaking. Besides Michaels' just blazing during his solo I couldn't help but notice he was doing all that with his eyes open, seeming like while currently rearranging a funky nod to Charlie Parker...already had his mind looking ahead on what mindnumbing music he was planning to serve on the next chorus. Goes to show ya' don't gotta close your eyes to intensify. Yeah buddy, leave it to our man Mike to make musical history without breaking a sweat.

I've always felt Brecker is one guy that just took the torch from Trane and took that "sheets of sound" forward and also modernized it to fit into contemporary music. I know there are many great players out there (including you Tim...Gawd you are such a bada** on so many levels). I always got the sense from Michael that his perspective was even though he was always considered The Master...he always took the approach to being the constant student and seeker of the next stone to turn over in music.

RIP Michael Brecker...what an innovator.

Mark R'....your words.." I've always felt Brecker is one guy that just took the torch from Trane and took that "sheets of sound" forward and also modernized it to fit into contemporary music. "....:).PERFECT AS ALWAYS. Your one of the very intutive guys in this forum, and always will be. You really hear that, and love Mike's contribution to this art form. So cool.

BTW- thanks for your kind nod towards what do. Thank you.
OK- You know my crazy electro-funkified bassoon thing; well here's where I learned the electro- part. THE MASTER !!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjTRO3ZXfbQ
Listen to the electric stuff in the middle.....@ 3;43 on...Michael goes bizerk with the pedals. ahaha.....TOTAL GENIUS !!!

Check Michael lovin Neil Jason on bass in this part;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO71hcTJDbA&feature=related
Ain't NOBODY got a quarter note in the pocket like Neil Jason.

TALK ABOUT ELECTRO-FONKY STUFF. lol- This guy, this guy....I love it.
To know him as I did, and get nothing but total good vibes/ support and luv was like a blessing; and a nod to....go ahead on with it. You know he gave me a WHAMMY pedal as a gift once and also found a MU-TRON new in a guitar center in NYC and copped it and sent it to me. ( with a crazy note in the box that looked like a ransome note !! lol ) Plus- part of a solos book that never came out I was contracted to write some " history" on him-and - it paid like " ok" . Mike asked what my $$ was...I told him. He was like " aw' man that is not a lot"....and seemed kinda bugged at the company for low ballin' my money. After we did the interview ( complete with a day at his home; of jammin' stritch & drums; eating donuts & coffee : playing etc ; and- he just got this had this mike-for transcription. From some company- it was as big as a quarter.... He was F 'in with it....like trying to max it out, playing_insane_ lines into it. And the thing was writing it out on a computer screen. LOL- the device wrote out everything! lol- ) OK- so after the interview....a week later I got a check from Mike for a nice sum for the interview. DIG HIM- I called him and told him " You got a lotta soul my brother". I think about this guy a lot....I never met a human being like him. Musician or just regular person. When I played NORTH SEA....he was totally supportive and we hung a lil' in the Hague. He caught a JAM...I was doing on a set with " RADIO HEAD" with my lil' Dutch Eb friend hangin' and playing too. We had jumped up cuz the Radiohead guys asked after hearing me jam in a late night Dutch cafe-bar in the Hague. So I plugged the bassoon into the soundsystem...man there was bassoon all over. ROCKIN'....I get back to my hotel room and there's a written message in my mail box. It was from Mike...he sais I got three words for you...SOLID BODY BASSOON !! Imagine reading that @ 6AM, afer a day of Dutch jams - the end to a great great day.
He also loved Hans Dulfer- he said you guys were having some fun. And, if you think of EVERYTHING Michael did...it was soooooooooooo amazing it WAS fun. I miss that cat, he was a blessing!

Great stuff, Tim. Thanks for posting. It's nice to have these reminders of how incredible Mike was. We may never see his kind of amazing talent, musicianship, and CHOPS ever again. Such a shame that he couldn't hang on a few more years.

After watching this clip, the word that comes to mind is "satisfying". I mean, they just DID IT. I was pleased to see a song led by a vocalist, where the instrumental player is allowed to shine so brightly and spectacularly. And I felt this was not just a case of Mike Brecker playing well, but that the band was really working great together.

There is a DVD available which this clip is from.

That tune, 'The Song is You'. What a great number.

I had a recording of Chet Baker doing it with some young tenor
player which was really excellent.
However, I later learned this guy (I don't remember his name) joined
up with Blood Sweat and Tears and then OD'ed on tour somewhere in
Europe I think.

What a waste.

Proof that no matter who you are, NO ONE should bother trying to scat after a Brecker solo!

Varitone pick-up? Sounds great!

Kavala,

I'm not familiar w/ the DVD but it sounds like you're talking about Greg Herbert. He was one kickbutt player!

Thanx, Shortwhite.

Just to clarify...
The DVD is of Chaka Khan with Mike and Randy Brecker.

Greg Herbert was on a recording with Chet Baker playing
'The Song is You'. I just mentioned that after listening to
Noel Jewkes play that tune.

I'd like to know where to get the Chaka Khan / Breckers DVD.

Secondly, the Chet baker CD is "Once Upon a Summertime". Greg Herbert sounds AMAZING. I got really turned on to his playing and then found out that he was no longer with us (and under-recorded). This CD has:

Greg Herbert - tenor
Harold Danko - Piano (FANTASTIC player. LOVE, love, LOVE Danko)
Ron carter - Bass
Mel Lewis- Drums

The kicker is that Chet plays Shorter's "ESP" and I have NEVER heard Chet sound so modern. He kicks it into gear. This is one great album (except that I think the piano may be out of tune. Danko deserved better.)

The Live at the Roxy DVD with the Breckers is released a few years ago as Chaka Khan - "The Signature Diva" - Live

It is a great album.

I only had it on mini cassette tape. Since lost or worn out. :(
It has always stuck in my mind how good Greg Herbert sounded. :)
Reminded me in sound a bit of Hank Mobley.

I never detected any Mobley in Herbert's tone. He had a compact (but not bright) "Trane via Bill Pierce" kinda sound.

(Bill Pierce: Another seriously underrated player. I caught him in Toronto with Mulgrew and it was HEAVY!!)

I could never get into Bill Pierce, much, but he has played with some
great drummers; no doubt about it .

I had dinner tonight with Roger Rosenberg and Greg Herbert's name came up. According to Roger, who knew him well, he was a clean guy. He never got involved in drugs. Apparently he was diabetic and he died as a result of complications from that.
