 Anyone tried BARI Gold on bari(tone)? These are supposed to be fairly high-baffle pieces,I had one for tenor long time ago, don't remember how the piece sounded though but tuning was a nightmare.Anybody using these on baritone?

Sam, I bought 2 tenor pieces from you...a Selmer jazz that I still play [and love] and that BARI tenor piece.Boy you aren't kidding about the intonation on that thing !

LBAJazz,I didn't mean to sell you a bad piece;thats how ALL the metal BARIs I've tried have been.

Metal BARIs play OK but to be able to play in tune, they cover 1/3 or 1/4 of the cork.My experience is with couple of tenor BARI Golds and one sop.BARI Gold. That was the intonation issue I was talking about.

I've had some other brands that had the same issue, not all of them have been high-baffle pieces either.I try never to trade or sell pieces that don't play or if I do,I always tell the buyer if there are major problems with the piece. The tuning thing of BARI and some other mpcs is just something that happens with certain mpcs,I wouldn't call it an fault since it happens with many brands. Some say this is because of the lenght of the shank.

I recently sold a tenor and a bari Runyon Jaguars to another SOTWer and he had major problems with the bari version,it didn't play in tune on his bari unless it almost fell off the cork.On my horn, the tuning was quite high too but it still covered about half of the cork.I've heard that other people here have had same kind of experiences with Jaguars but that does not mean that the mpc is bad,not in my book anyway.Thats the way I see this thing.

But I'm glad to hear you like and play the Selmer metal Jazz,I didn't use it much so I'm happy it found a good home.

Oh man, I didn't mean to imply you sold me a bad piece. You know how the mouthpiece hunt goes...you never know what's going to work for you. The Selmer is worth way more than you charged me for BOTH pieces ! Everytime I try anything else, I keep coming back to it. I works GREAT on my old Buescher stencil [Silvertone]. That Selmer piece you sold me was one of the best deals I've ever gotten online.

I bought the Jaguars from Subtone Sam and liked the sound of the bari piece...assuming it was just my horns, I sold it to another SOTWer whom it works for (haven't heard any complaints). Both my baris (older 12M Conn and Keilwerth stencil from the late 60's) are of the large bore variety and are sensitive (IMHO) to mouthpiece volume. I have a theory that I am beginning to test (although I have limited access to bari pieces), that tuning is more about volume than length. I have a Lamberson SB and Woodwind NY that I play regularly...the Lamberson plays best about 1.5 cm engaged on the cork the Woodwind likes to be closer to 2.3 cm. The Jaguar worked best at 4-5 mm. Crudely measuring the volume from the end of the neck (by filling the whole piece with water level to the facing and then pouring it into a measure, then deducting the calculated 'lost' volume in the shank that engages) these all left similar volumes. But the Woodwind is by far the shortest piece and the Lamberson is the longest (shank to tip). The length of these three pieces is VERY different. I'm going to add my Berg to this measure...

For some reason, horns with narrower bore (like Selmer, Yamaha, Yana...) seem less sensitive to volume, although I have limited experience. My King Zephyr was also less sensitive...high baffle pieces were fine. Sadly, I like the sound and response of the big bore horns.

LBAJazz,I was just explaining what I meant about the intonation thing on BARI metals, everythings OK,no problems here 8)

I actually like the BARI metals,I like the sound and I'm thinking the baritone version might work.

shmuelyosef, maybe it was a mpc/horn thing then.I've heard that some older horns, especially baris don't work with certain mouthpieces. But I´m glad to hear there was a happy ending with the Jag. after all.

I never had big troubles with any bari mpcs, they all seem to work on my low Bb JK.I'm not sure of the high-baffles though,I have several coming so I guess I'll find out...
