a friend gave me a "mix" tape today with mostly forgetable stuff. one tune on it, "The Summer Wind" by Frank Sinatra, just knocked me out! i've since learned that the band is Nelson Riddle but i haven't been able to find out who the bari player is? anyone of you cats know who it is and what his setup is? in my headphones, it comes through like a gorilla...

Sol Schlinger played bari with Sinatra stuff.
Sol was one of the Bronx guys long with younger guys like Fred Lipsius who studied with Bill Shriner ( a teacher of Stan Getz)

Sol had an excellent kicking bari sound. I saw a picture of him with John LaPorta on a record and he was using a metal link. In those days Sol could of had one of the "maters" like Frank Wells or the refacer at Linx and Long in NYC re face the piece. OR- It coulda been stock. Or- maybe it was a 5 or 6 metal link....that was perfect. what a SOUND.
In any case....Sol had..THE SOUND. I asked a friend who played w/Sinatra who was the bari player on this...as....many times I wondered myself....it was Sol.

hey tim,
thanks for the info on sol schlinger. considering how often i've heard and dismissed "The Summer Wind" in the past, it is a mystery to me, how it managed to get to me. i think when i heard it years ago, the sound quality of radio was poor and therefore the sublety was lost. being able to "hear" the arrangement (esp the bari) lifts it from the schmaltzy catagorization of my youth and delivers instead a sublime tour de force...or maybe i'm just gettin old.

btw. do you know what kind of bari he played? any tunes where he was featured?
thanks
