Despite all negative things said about quality control and inconsistencies, it's Otto Link. For alto it's Meyer. They set a kind of standard and are the most copied pieces. But them again, everyone is different and there are other great pieces with different designs.

The best hard rubber for me is the Vandoren V5. The best plastic for me is the J. D. Hite Premier. I don't use metal mpcs on alto. 8)

Custom Grade:

Dave Guardala (good old hand made day only)
Doc Tenney (The Wizard) His Meyer alto helped me won a price in jazz fest.
J Gerber (The Shooting Star) Sir! we are waiting for your tenor line!
Jon Van Wie (became a good old day)
Freddie Gregory (not for everyone)

Production Grade:

Dave Guardala, Lazer Trim (The WWBW made are good too)
Vandoren (not too easy to find a really bad one)
Selmer Paris (The new Soloist and Supersession are killers)
Brancher
Rousseau (Metal Jazz)
Davis Hite (easy blowing, paying too!!)

I am waiting for my coming Dave Zagar!

When I was taking lessons in the 70's I was having difficulty getting the tone I was hearing in my head. One day I noticed an Otto Link 5* sitting in my teachers studio and I asked about it, he said he didn't like it but I was welcome to try it. Suddenly the tone I was getting was what I was hearing in my head. I've never played with another mouthpiece since then.

Of course that's a silly attitude, I should be opening my mind to other tones but I've been away frmo the sax for about 20 years, I think I'll work on getting my chops back first.

I have tried Guy Hawkins, Brilhart Level Air, Otto Link, Lawton, Berg Larsen, Morgan L Jazz and Excalibur, J&D Hite, Yamaha, Yanagisawa, Selmer Jazz, Otto Link rod rubber and my favourite for design is J&D Hite hands down, because I am looking for the most complete sound followed by Florida Links and pre Florida Links but nothing after for sure, and I am a great admires of Morgan's facings and the L Jazz but the design itself not so much but it has the distinction, with me of being the only other mouthpiece that I would bother with out of all those others, as they butcher the tone way too much, for special effects and cheap short cuts, or to save money.

I play my best with
Ponzol M2 (tenor),
Morgan Excalibur (alto) and
LeBayle HR (sop).

However, in general, I've had very positive experiences with
Morgans and
RPCs
on all my reed instruments.

Vandoren for their quality control and all round good design...
Must say I'm a sucker for a good Berg larsen- inconsistent build quality but the best of them superb, fat toned pieces with as much flexibility as anything else i've ever come across.

Berg Larsen. :D but i do love them, in fact.

Morgan mouthpieces are nicely made and sound great. I can't claim to have played a lot of the mps mentioned here, though.

Selmer soloists are hard to beat on alto (IMHO). Very versatile.
