Hello as my UserName states I play bari and I am mainly a bari player who is trying to work on his chops for the other axes...my problem is I am looking for that Cannonball Adderley type sound a fat sound with some brightness and edge. He is one of my biggest influences and I've transcribed and I listen to him all the time and sound is near impossible for me without modifying my mouthpiece. I know everyone sounds different but when I play alto its all dark and stuffy sounding. I play a V16 A9M and the reason I don't play the smaller chamber is because I can't play it in tune to save my life. I've tried other small chambered mouthpieces and the Jumbo Java and I just cannot play them in tune. But the M V16's I can play in tune but they are just way to dark. So I assume I need some sort of Medium Large chambered mouthpiece. But something with more baffle. And I've tried so many mouthpieces its ridiculous and I cannot get anywhere close to that sound. wow this is very long and I apologize for rambling, however I am trying to give as much detail so I can answer any questions you have. Well I got some sticky tack and made a large and long roll over baffle that smooths into the chamber but does not close up the chamber of the mouthpiece and I can get that sound...now my next question....I would like to switch to a smaller tip opening on all my horns and this is the last one. I have found so many improvements to using more medium tipped mouthpieces as opposed to larger tipped. I started on a berg 130/0 SMS HR. Switched to this and haven't changed again although I would like to move to more the 6-7 range. On my bari I started out with large tips a custom 12* Link with a baffle now I am at an 8 DV. on Tenor I started with a Barone Hollywood 10* and now moved to a Theo Link 7*. So I was thinking that with my V16 9M I could send it to a refacer and have them close it way down and then open back up which will give more baffle material to work with without changing the size of the chamber. Does this seem plausible and who would be the best to do it. I was thinking the mouthpiece guys or Mojo or EZ but yeah....Thanks for reading my long winded post. So to sum it all up is there another mouthpiece with a Medium Large chamber and a High Long Rollover or should I just get my mouthpiece modified?

I think you would probably like the Phil-Tone. I think that would fit your tonal concept.

Try a Rico Jazz Select on the V16. Very bright. Very edgy.

I'm with altosaxguy: experiment with other reeds before you touch your mpcs.
Check out the fibracells for instance, should give you some more brightness while keeping a huge round bottom end.

Have you tried some smaller tipped V16s or Meyers?

your suggestion might work but try reeds & stuff first. Option 2 is take the you would have used the reface and get a morgan ML chamber in a 6-7

definitely a morgan. I like stu's Idea of the ML chamber but if you are willing to, play around with some different models and chamber sizes

I have tried an abundance of reeds but honestly I have not tried those on this piece I love them on my bari and soprano though. Thanks for the heads up and give those a shot. definitely cheaper than my other options.

These I have tried and I honestly don't really like Fibracells on the smaller horns I used to play them on bari for that extra buzz but I have switched to something else. But thanks for the comment and for reading.

I have tried smaller tipped and at the time when I was purchasing a V16 I tried out about 10 different ones and like I said I couldn't get the small chambered to play in tune so I went with the medium chambered and at the time I was in need of a darker sound for a musical I was doing. But now I am looking for something brighter. I also found my 9 oddly brighter than the other mouthpieces...just not bright enough for my taste.

as for Stu and ColossusJr I was actually thinking of getting an Excalibur 7ML to try out. So I may just do that. My birthday is in an hour so I bet I will get some money today to help fund my new purchases.

THANK YOU to all I will try this and report back. If anyone else has a solution I encourage you to tell me. Thanks Again

I'm in no way a help for the mouthpiece question, but I would like to ask you to use a paragraph here and there. Your post is interesting, but such a long, continuous stream of letters is difficult for me to read.

Sorry for the nagging.

If you have a temporary baffle in your mouthpiece that you like, you or a refacer can make a more permanent one out of epoxy. Closing the MP down and opening it up again would distort its shape unneccessarily.

Just a thought regarding the small chambered pieces - were they playing consistently flat? If so it might simply be that you weren't able to push the piece far enough onto the crook. I had a similar problem and had to get the reinforcing ring on the end of my crook adjusted to accomodate small chamber pieces (V16 A6S and a Jody Jazz HR* 6M). Once that adjustment was made it was easy to play them in tune!

I love mine but just so you know, it is not te excalibur ML chamber it's the Jazz ML chamber amazing piece just don't expect the shank to have a metal band around it like I did
