I'm having difficulty finding an appropriate mouthpiece for my Conn stencil bari. Modern pieces like my RPC just don't seem to agree with it; the intonation is hard to control, and it does this strange thing on B3 and C3, where if I attack the note hard, theres a slight "pop" in the sound just after I tongue. I've switched back to my S80, and I have fewer problems. I have to wonder if it's because the chamber is slightly larger; weren't these horns designed to use x-large chamber pieces?

I suggest looking for a good NYWWco piece on ebay and having it opened to your liking. I did this for my tenor and am a very happy man:)!

How long is the RPC? I've got one that's 5 1/2" and it works great with my New Wonder bari. You might want to have Ron make an extra long one for you. But yeah, there's always a good WW Co. piece; just make sure it has rounded side walls (not flat).

Yeah, I did have Ron make it extra long. The problem isn't so much that it plays consistently sharp, but that it is hard to lock into the correct pitch, kinda like trying to balance on a basketball. I will look into the WWCo mouthpieces.

May I suggest the Rico Graftonite A5 or A7. The A is a large chamber with an ENORMOUS dark sound. It's gorgeous, and it really speaks...

all for $15. It's an Arnold Brilhart design, too.

Well, if it's at least 5 1/2" long, and you want to sell/trade it, just send me a PM. Heck, you might even talk me out of my WW Co. piece that I keep as a spare...

And if either of you RPC trading folks have a .130 opening and wish to trade for a .110, let me know :)

Hasn't there been several references to Erik G's B75 double chamber mods working well with large bore bari's?

BTW I have a new condition B75 for sale (missed the return deadline). Sending in your own can be much cheaper than buying one from junkdude.

I have not tried my bari Link HR on an old Conn (I have a Yani bari), but Links work very well on my 10M.

You might be using your embouchure to close the tip opening some to get it to speak easier. Now if you embouchure support wavers a little bit, the pitch will too. You could try taking in more mouthpiece and using a softer reed.

Where do you find these? Seems like everyone only carries the B chamber.

From Rico's website:

Note: Soprano and Baritone are available only in B chamber

But don't let that stop you from recommending them.

I've been very happy with my Morgan Bass/Baritone mpc on my Tranny 12M.

The Greiffenhagen B75 Double Chamber mouthpiece is a terrific choice for a vintage bari. I play a '53 "The Martin" which has a great sound, but also some "squirlly" intonation tendencies (which have been discussed on numerous other threads) and the Greiffenhagen piece is the best match I've found to minimize these tendencies.

The B75 Double Chamber is a large chambered piece, with a similar baffle to a Berg 3 chamber. Erik plays a Conn 12M and designed the original Morgan Baritone/Bass Double Chamber piece. When the blanks that Morgan used were no longer available, he opted for the Vandoren V5 as a blank. I have two (.110" and .105") and have found myself gravitating to the smaller tip opening. Also, I find Legere or Bari plastic reeds to work really well on the piece.

The B chamber is the all around best choice for the Alto through Tenor models IMO anyway. Happily, it is the one chosen for what is the only chamber size for the Baritone MP.

I like the A for Tenor as well, but the C is just too darn chirpy for my tastes.

I think the Baritone model is the best of the Rico Graftonite bunch personally.

So far my Martin bari seems to be most happy with a Meyer mouthpiece. I prefer the sound of the Link, but intonation is much better with the Meyer.

I also recently received a Vandoren B75 double chamber from Erik Greiffenhagen. It has enough baffle for good projection, and a big, deep sound. I went with the .110" tip. Sounds great on my 1957 Martin Committee. I bought a stock B75 and sent it to Erik, which was indeed the cheaper alternative.

Oh yeah man, I had a B7 for bari, and an A5 for alto. Just assumed A and C chambers would be on bari too.

I have both B75 and Morgan double chamber (both being Erik's children:))...they both work great on my VI bari.

I purchased a Bob Carpenter refaced Rico Graftonite, which he opened to .115, and extended the facing length to 28mm. For very little money, even with his fees, it plays incredibly well on my Yamaha 62 Bari. For a real "junkyard dog" bark, put on a synthetic like the Hahns, Fibercells, or even the Bari regulars. Like adding an AFTERBURNER to your bari.
The other posters who have recommended the Graftonite, are quite correct; even stock, out of the box.
