Pardon if this type of question has been asked.
I just picked up a Gemeinhardt flute for $35 US with a serial number 230xxx and an 'M2' above it. It also has closed tone holes. I plan on spiffing it up to learn to play it, but I haven't been able to get a serial number chart yet. I'm just curious. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know the age, but I have worked on many of this model flute. They are characterised as physically robust, but by today's standards, have a weak, 'fuzzy' tone, and sluggish response. They are somewhat variable from flute to flute. So if it doesn't sound too hot, don't entirely blame yourself.
I have found the tone improvable by over and undercutting the embouchure hole.

That's alright, I didn't plan on performing on it. :D It still sounds like I got a decent deal. Thanks Gordon.

I worked for G for about 10 years and you have a basic student model from the 60s however there has never been any correct way to determine the age. On a positive side, those Gs tend to play even when they are leaking and are just fine for basic flute work. Watch the pitch as they tend to be flat especially if you roll in too much. You got a deal. I sell ratty ones for $125-150. Pretty durable.

A good deal indeed. I just need to get two pads replaced, but probably get them all done. Some of the larger pads are held in by a set of washers and a screw. I found this intereting. Thank you Bruce. :D

"Some"???
ALL except the 3 small ones should be held in with a washer and a screw.

You are absolutely right Gordon. I didn't actually look at all of the pads at first. I didn't know they used a screw and washer for Flutes, very interesting.
