Does anyone know The Duke Ellington Orchestras Johnny Hodges horn/mouthpiece/ reed setup?
On alto got such a creamy, dark and singing sound.
His soprano had a very dark, plantif sound full of wood and texture. (as Betchet did)

A Matched Set: I recall Hodges played Bueschers (several varieties throughout his career). I don't know the set-ups he used. And, as you may already know, Hodges studied with Bechet. DAVE

I have a photo of him playing a Vito. Go figure.

JH played Conn alto to about 1942, then Buescher Aristocrat type I for most of his career. You see some pictures with a Buescher 400, but most pictures from actual recording shows a very Aristocrat like sax. After about 1965 he changed again to a Vito/Leblanc alto.
During the 40s he often used Brilhart Tonalin Mouthpieces on his Conn6M.
Late 40s until the late 60s he played a Buescher Aristocrat or a 400 with aristocrat neck. The mouthpiece I think was with these horns a Berg Larsen HR.
