I just read some really sad news on the Sax newsgroup. Jon Van Wie, the great mouthpiece refacer, posted to say that he has an apparently inoperable cancer, and the prognosis is very grim.
Anyone who has ever worked with Jon knows he is not only a very talented mouthpiece artist, but a super nice guy who cares deeply about every project he is given. Jon has also been very willing to "talk shop" at length any time I called with a mouthpiece question.
At this point, Jon has elected to forego any invasive treatments, many of which are known to weaken and sicken the patient while prolonging life. Jon wants to make the most of what time he has.
His plan is to finish as much of the work currently waiting as possible.
Very, very sad indeed. Still, Jon is keeping a very positive and courageous attitude.
