I am comparing the YSS-62 (used), S901 (used), and Antigua 590 (used). The Antigua is least expensive but I can get the Yamaha and Yani for about $1300 each.

I am returning to sax after a looong lay-off and want to buy a solid horn that is a keeper but doesn't break the bank.

I know there are many opinions about these horns scattered on the forum. I would greatly appreciate seeing them concentrated on these three horns.

Any opinions welcome on price and quality. Vent spleen if you must (in fact, I welcome it).

Peace.

I'm curious too. Do you have a feel for what kind of work each of the used saxes will require to play well? How about pad life, etc.?

I'm passing up an older Yani-stenciled Vito for less than a 590 (prob. way less) because of older ergonomics and older pads.

I have a YSS 62 and it is a great horn. Much better than the new 675s and 875s in my opinion. A lot of pros use this horn.

I have to admit that I probably favor the sound of the Yani 901 though and if I had a choice, I would probably go for the yani.

I can't comment on the Antigua, but I have heard they are a great value for the money. Resale is one thing to consider though.

I would go with either the Yani or the Yamaha -- depending on the deal that you can get and the condition of the horns.

I once owned a silver 62 sop. I now own a Yana S992 and a new Antigua (I guess it is the 590 - dual neck with hi-G . . . in lacquer). For sheer playability, I like the new Antigua the best. For re-sale, obviously the Yana will be better.

I have tried S901s before and was not all that impressed (not like I was when I tried the Antiguas - purchasing one means I was impressed). I don't think you can go wrong with the Antigua (at least the latest models - I'm not familiar with those that have been on the market for sometime - at least long enough to sell used).

Good luck - and remember, all of our advice is subjective. One example of a cheap sop may play better than one example of a top-'o'-the-line horn. DAVE

Dave is right on about our opinions being subject. Play them and go with what you like.

doublepunk-

If you pass on the Antigua please email the price. I've been looking for a deal like that on a 590.

Personally, I would recommend the Yanagisawa. At $1300 for a S901 (make sure its a 901), thats a steal! Especially with the Exchange rate doing terrible right now, Yanagisawa horns are starting to raise in price a bit.

Thanks for the replies on the sax comparison. Your wisdom and experience is always appreciated. I'm still haggling on the horns, as the sellers are bumping up their prices. Where's the holiday spirit people?!

Bill08690: BTW, that Antigua I quoted was for a new, not used one (my goof). I live in Southern California but there aren't many Antigua dealers nearby. The one I called didn't have any in stock. I'll most likely give Dave Kessler a call if I decide on that horn. Seems like a lot of folks on this board have bought from him and are more than satisfied.
