Haven't got a lot of sax jazz, mostly clarinet(Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw etc). Have 1 cd of sax ballads and thats about it.
Have $50 gift card to spend on itunes store, what suggestions on what to get ?
Or if you could only get $50 worth of songs to showcase sax (jazz) what would they be ?

Forgot I already have a copy of Pete Thomas's cd Mr Lucky

Anything by Phil Dwyer:
Fables and Dreams - with Dave Young, this will be my next purchase when I'm done studying the albums I have
Road Stories - great fusion album, some straight ahead, some rock. One killer sax/drums track at the end
One Take, Vol.2 - Make this one a priority. Seach Phil Dwyer on youtube, you'll find videos the piano player on this session made from a couple of the tracks.

"Kind of Blue" - Miles Davis album (it has my favorite Cannonball Adderley performances)
"My Favorite Things" - Coltrane album (yes, the entire album)
something by Sonny Rollins, but I don't know which one
something by Charlie Parker, but I don't know which selections are available on iTunes.

I heard a professor play Tenor madness up when I was auditioning for the school I am going to attend next year.
Cool Song. I will also second My Favorite Things and Giant Steps both of these are by John Coltrane.
I would recomend you check out Work Song by Cannonball Adderly, and Mercy Mercy Mercy also by Cannonball.

You can't throw this guy straight into Coltrane, Bird and the like and expect him to know what's going on!!!
Now how about going way back????
Lester Young-Blue Lester (or Lester Young with Oscar Peterson trio)
Coleman Hawkins (maybe the ken burns jazz cd...it is a good start. If not, Giants of the Tenor Sax with Frank Wess is also a great place to start.)
Johnny Hodges and Gerry Mulligan- Gerry Mulligan meets Johnny Hodges
Listen to those albums over and over! There's so much to learn from them, it's ridiculous. Hodge's playing on the album with Gerry Mulligan includes some of my favorite takes of him. Start with the beginning and progress through the ages!
I liked the Kind of Blue and Soul Station recommendations. Another later album I'd recommend would be "something else" from Cannonball Adderley.
Telling somebody new to jazz to go out and get blown away by Coltrane or Bird is crazy. It would be like telling a trumpet player to listen to a guy like wynton, lee morgan, or dizzy before digging into Louis Armstrong!

The Blues and the Abstract Truth - Oliver Nelson

I don't know if it's on Itunes, but the album Horn to Horn with Houston Person and Teddy Edwards covers a lot of tenor territory; I'm not sure if I'd start with Blues and the Abstract Truth, but the Soul Battle cd, with Jones, Jimmy Forrest, and King Curtis is really comprehensive too.
Rather than individual songs you'll probably have to think in terms of players--and horns. Get at least one bari tune. Pepper Adams or Gerry Mulligan. Johnny Hodges on alto too can't be missed. And the Atomic Basie era woodwind section!! And I'd vote for at least one tune with Charlie Rouse playing with Thelonious Monk! I kind of got sick of him, but the European player Jan Garbarek is somebody who would count as a major voice in modern jazz. Charles Lloyd's Forest Flower!
Man, that $100 will go fast! (forget about Apple and go to spiralfrog.com; you can fill your boots for free legally)

The next time you are searching through the bargin bin or at a used store, look for Dave Brubeck or his quartet, the album Take Five belongs in all saxophone players library's.

I'll throw out a couple albums:
Further Definitions - Benny Carter. You get Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Coleman Hawkins, and Charlie Rouse all together.
Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago - Cannonball Adderley. Cannonball and Coltrane together. It's the Kind of Blue band minus Miles. It is a saxophone masterclass.
Boss Tenors - Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt. An album showing nice contrasts between these two tenor giants.
Dexter Gordon - Go!, Our Man in Paris, Doin' Allright, A Swingin' Affair. You can't go wrong with Dex's Blue Note albums.
There are about 1,000,000 other albums you could get, but I think for starting out, it's good to get exposure to as many players as you can.

It depends on what exactly you'd like to get. You say : "get $50 worth of songs to showcase sax (jazz)" To me it means getting the widest span of the history of jazz saxophone for 50 bucks, not necessarily the ones you will like best - moreover we can't decide that for you. So I would definitely check out some Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan, Kenny Garrett, Lee Konitz, Dexter Gordon, maybe some Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson, even some Ornette Coleman.
Victor.

Totally agree with magical pig (what's magical about the pig i wonder?).
That's a good list.
To that list i'd definitley add tunes played by Paul Desmond
and you CAN'T leave off Cannonball Adderley
can throw Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Joshua Redman, Ahmad Jamal, Don Byas into the mix as well
non saxophonists include bill evans, bud powell, lee morgan, miles davis
the list goes on and on...

Hey Swing', have you garnered the Mosaic set of Turrentine?
And let's not forget the Stanley Turrentine/Shirley Scott recordings. 8-)
You and I need to compile the discography - unless you already found one. If so, please turn me on to it. Hah! Did you see/hear the Diana Krall recordings with Turrentine? Yes!:D

Well, I guess you already spent your $50, so this is too late. But for anyone else, iTunes has a pretty good "Jazz Saxophone Essentials" collection. There are about 75 cuts in total, and you can listen to each one for 30 seconds before selecting it. I got all of them, and I haven't gotten tired of listening to them yet. A few of the cuts aren't what I'd consider my typical cup of tea, but you can still learn a lot from listening to them.
Other than that, I'd say you can't go wrong with Cannonball Adderly and Dexter Gordon. If you have any of your $50 left, I'd spend it on Sonny Rollins.

Since your from Sydney too, you might like someone who gigs around here. Buy some Adrian Cunningham. Only two of his album's on iTunes, so I'll name a few that are on there. Definitely get... Just Thought I'd Ask, Unrequited, Goodbye Soup, Fields of Gold, Georgia On My Mind, 12,000ft, Keeping Fit With Ken, or Caribe. He flew out of Australia a couple of months ago to live in NY, but will be back in a couple of years (He told me his visa only lasts 6 years I think, maybe less...). Whereabouts in Sydney are you. Were you on IAJE Jazz Camp 08??? Were you the sop/clarinet player???
And I agree, Phil Woods is awsome.
PM me!

Brookvale and work near Central (UTS - Sydneys ugliest building)
No haven't yet been on any jazz camps unfortunately , would love to.
Been buying more songs, got quite a few Cannonball Adderly ,Dexter Gordan, Zoot Sims and a couple of albums of Sidney Bechet.
Favourite song at the moment is Summertime played by Sidney Bechet
(On Best Jazz 100 - Legends of Jazz)
followed by another version(fairly similar sounding) played by Charlie Parker
Haven't seen Jazz Saxophone Essentials on Itunes Australia yet
maybe US only.
Off to band practice in a few minutes.
First band practice on soprano usually on clarinet.

Sidney Bechet's "Summertime" is one of the songs I got off of iTunes Essentials. I like it a lot, too. It reminds me that I don't always have to blow so hard to sound good!
