Anyone try both the JJ and the 'Q' bari pieces from Jody Espina? What are the differences? How do fit in a list like: Link Berg /2 and /3 Berg /0 and /1 Lamberson SB or Lawton B Lamberson DD or Lawton BB

They are great mpcs, the Q version is very like the Lawton and the JJ is like a beefed up version of the Custom. Very usable mpcs.

I have a Quantum 11 and a Lawton 8B. On average the Quantum is a touch louder but the Lawton honks quite nicely too. The Q is very thin sounding. The Lawton has a much nicer tone from top to bottom... thick with substance. I think you'll be hard pressed to get the Lawton sound out of a Runyon. Maybe a Custom but not a Q. Basically, they're good for the money.
From what I understand, the JodyJazz mpcs are just cherry picked Runyons. The quality control at Runyon leaves something to be desired. You also get a Rovner lig. If you don't want to go through the hassle of sending back your Runyon (because of manufacturing inconsistencies) then get a JJ. The stock Runyon lig is a badly made piece of plastic so you'll end up buying something else anyway.

Try a refaced Quantum or Custom, this will surprise you. The Lawtons are great too but you have to search through several to find the good ones. As for RunyonQC, it is good and far better than many other well known mpc manufacturers.
The basic facts are, that a custom refaced mpc will always play better than an off the shelf model. Normally, you buy a new mpc and then have to tweak it.

What Justbari is saying is not true. The JodyJazz mouthpieces that are based on Runyons have my facing lengths and curves, different hand finished baffles and different tips. This was all worked out over many trips to the factory with Santy Runyon's help and guidance to get exactly the feel and sound that I wanted. Justbari is correct that I have a high standard of quality and that I play test every mouthpiece before it goes out. Also I put the Rovner ligatures with the mouthpieces because I believe that they are great pieces and they deserve a great ligature.
The ESP line that I have developed are not based on Runyons. The ESP bari has just been finished and for me, it's the best bari mouthpiece that I've ever played.
