I'm workin on a couple solos, improvisation et caprice, beautiful colorado(no piano part however which really takes away from the tune) ... I've got some money that this week i'm going to be spending on some new solos.

I could use a couple tips on some good solos jazz and straight; all state music tryouts for solo/ensemble coming up(few months but I want practice) and I need to get my hands on a piece that'll blow em away... any reccomendations? Also where to buy the pieces would be appreciated 8)

Best thing is to transcribe solos off CDs...you must have some favorite bari players that you listen to.

well it's not just jazz solos but straight; it's really hard to find bari players out there who do cd solos enough on jazz, but I just don't know any famous names that do any straight stuff on the bari. For my all state solo i REALLY want a killer straight piece. Jazz doesn't seem to fly on these trips...

I just did a solo at a concert recently. my advice is to mostly stick to a blues scale that corresponds to whatever key you're in (damn, that'd be tough on "here's that rainy day". ugh... concert G...) moving off of the scale of some other notes as well. also, use a as much of your range as you are comfortable with (for me, left palm f). practicing the blues scales is always a good idea as well, to help get the hang of them. i'm lucky the solos i usually get are in concert Bb.

thanks m, classicsax.com seems to be fine. I wish jwpepper had a better selection of solos for bari like pendersmusic, I would love a combo of those two places!
